Default Was this too tight?

Heres the stats from a tourny I played in. It got me to the money, but I couldnt ever get a comfortable size stack. What do you think?

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 171 hands and saw flop:
- 8 out of 19 times while in big blind (42%)
- 3 out of 20 times while in small blind (15%)
- 7 out of 132 times in other positions (5%)
- a total of 18 out of 171 (10%)
Pots won at showdown - 3 of 4 (75%)
Pots won without showdown - 11

You play too tight. You need to open up you game. Steal more when you are in position, and remember you don't need a hand to steal. 3 out of 20 times in the SB..that's a very high fold to steal %.

wow, i dont think i've ever seen someone play as low as 10%...although that is probably a little too tight, your patience is commendable...i can play tight when i'm at my best, but it is rare for me to dip below 17% or so...

you were perhaps playing a little tight
however, this was a tourney and not a ring game. It has to be put into context.

You could have been at a table with crazy raisers - i still think you were maybe a little too tight but since you finished in the money i dont think you did that bad

have to agree that your small blind was probably stole a few times

Well, I had planned on playing tight, but not this tight. Just that everytime I picked up a hand I might like to play I was either in early position or some one put in a massive raise. I didnt get very many premium hands. I think I had KK once and AK twice, and that was about it. The cards were cold, and everyone else was having a raising contest, so it makes it hard to steal a pot.

KK once and AK is pretty good in my opinion - you should be able to pick up some big pots with those.

If the players were raising a lot then you should have been able to get them involved when you hit kings - in my opinion, if you get any pocket pair jacks or above at the final table your doing very well

I was at Professor's table for a while and he was also in a bad spot in that he was betting into the tournament chip leader. Most of the time that I was at that table the chip leader had around twice the number of chips as the second place person in the tournament. When you are betting into the chip leader who is liable to call with marginal hands because it is affordable, it makes it difficult to buy blinds. Just thought I'd toss that out there because that certainly has some bearing on the percentages here.

I did pick up big pots with those. Its just that those are the only times I was comfortable getting into a big pot. And 3 times in three hours is just enough to keep you around.

I dont get too hung up on percentages. While I am ideally now at about 20%, if the table is really tight, I'll be at more like 30% if it is loose, I'll be around 15%. It's a guideline, not a rule. My first MTT win I played 13% of the hands. Its the last 2 stats that count the most. pots won at showdown (I was 14/15until the last 4 people) and pots won before showdown. Those are the important stats. In any one tourney, your pots played can be low (not getting good cards or at a bad table to steal) or high (on a rush of good cards).

Bob

By the way, I'm pretty sure that any pot won before the flop wont be included in those percentages. So even if you DO steal it can look like a low number.

The percentages are very tight in anyones book. I don't consider you to be an overly tight player so you must have had a run of bad hole cards and when you tried to play some marginal hands got raised out of them. So you probably got the most out of what you had to work with.
