Default A Lesson I Learned on Patience!

Last night I was playing a tournament. I had about an average chips stack, and was playing fairly tight. I hadnt seen any good cards for over an hour. In fact, I dont think Id even seen a flop in that long.

I was getting slightly frustrated about this. So when I picked up an Ace rag (A9s), I decided what the hell, lets see a flop. No one had raised, so it was a cheap price to see a flop. Then I hit an A on the flop. One player bets and the rest fold. Then the fact that I havent seen any cards and have finallly hit something on the flop starts taking over. I end up calling this guy down to the river and losing to a better kicker (which is exactly what I put him on, but played anyway.....d'oh). I knew I wasnt going to win this hand, but I was so tired of not plalying anything I took a big risk on the chance that I might win it. This puts me as somewhat of a short stack.

Then, the very next hand I get is AA. And guess what, I get some action from the same guy who just took half my chips, and he ends up doubling me back up to about where I was the hand before.

Now, if I would have waited one more hand and gotten that kind of action and doubled up I would have had a fairly healthy chip stack and been in contention to make the money. But, at least this hand really reminded me what I thought I already knew. BE PATIENT, the next hand could change the tournament for you, so dont risk chips on one thats probably gonna make it worse.

the reason i do well in mtts is i am very very patient i will sit and wait for a hand.most players panic if they see the blinds eating away at there chips and bet with ace rag or small pockets i have lost count of how many times these players have added to my chip count lol
i recently made the top 27 of a mtt playing 7% of flops as my cards were so bad

I've had the same thing happen to me. I'll get 10 5, 9 4, 7 3 and muck them only to see them flop full houses or 2 pairs or trips. It gets me all antsy to get in there and mix it up because I'm not getting anything good. As soon as I get a marginal hand I'll play it and lose.

That's when I start chanting;

"Don't be stupid, another hand is 30 secs. away"
"Be patient butthead"
"Time for a smoke"
"Oh my drinks empty, time for another" non-alcoholic
"Play smart dummy, you KNOW what to do"
"FOLD is a good thing"

Just a few clean thoughts that I go through. I won't go through the more colorful ones because I know we all know those.
