Default What would you do when 3 cards of the same suit come on the flop

You'll see this situation pretty much every time your in a tournament

Im curious as to how everyone thinks you should with this situation with specific hands. I really think the responses could help some members deal with what usually involves a very hard call.

Lets assume that its the first hand in a sng ie. you know nothing about your opponents and your neither chip leader or short stacked. No pre flop raises either so its difficult to put any one on a specific hand since everyone called

You get dealt your hole cards (which you will see soon) and the flop comes

The Scenarios

How would you deal with every scenario - eg. think about what you would do in early or late position, think about what you would do against an aggressive player who raises a lot or how you would deal with someone whos very cautious when you flop a good hand and are trying to maximise the pot.

As i said before, this type of flop can sometimes mean you need to make a difficult call. It can also be very difficult to pick up a good pot when you do flop a good hand.

Ive given a lot of scenarions for everyone to consider so its maybe best just to pick one to answer in detail. (if you think ive left any scenario out which should be there please let me know and ill add it to the thread )

Scenario 1 : Straight, no Flush
Scenario 2 : Open Ended Straight Draw, no Flush
Scenario 3 : Open Ended Straight Draw & Flush draw
Scenario 4 : The Overpair
Scenario 5 : The Low Flush
Scenario 6 : The High Flush
Scenario 7 : The Nuts
Scenario 8 : Trips
Scenario 9 : Two Pair
Scenario 10 : Flush Draw

I'll take scenario 7 everytime. Its not only the Nuts after the flop. It's the ultimate Nuts. It cant be beat. Only a higher str8 flush which is impossible since i hold the 8.

Now how would I play it?............... n i c e a n d s l o w.
After flop in early to mid position I wiould check and call. In late position if unchecked I would check the flop in hopes of someone catching something on turn. I do not want to scare anyone away from this pot.

On the turn same as above. check and call. And I'd tke a couple extra seconds doing it. (Like I was contemplating). I'm just looking for someone to catch something.

On the river depending on who's still in the pot and what position i'm in. If the pot is still small and the river card might have helped someone ( like a 4th club ) I'm going to reraise any bet made. If its checked to me an obvious value bet is in order and hope I'm reraised so I can push those chips in the middle of the pot.

1. I would call any small bets (considering we started with 1500) i wouldent call anything over 400$.
2. I would be cautious,i would fold to any bet, because so many different card combos could beat me and after all , im only on a draw, and not even the flush draw.
3. This hand is ok to kinda hang back in the background.... and hope for a great catch.
4. The only way im staying in the hand is if 4th street is another Q, if not , im out.
5. Hell yeah im staying in this hand , ive got the flush and a str8 flush draw, im goin all in!
6. This is a great hand, the only thing u have to worry about is str8 flush and ace high flush... not likely...so if bet into GO ALL IN!
7.(100% OF THE TIME YOU WILL PLAY THIS HAND!).......slow play em....let the bullys bet into your monster....be patient because i guarantee you they will.....over eagerness is the main reason people rake in a pot of 400$ when it coulda been 4000$...
8. This is also a hand to hang in the background and hope for the board to pair, if it does then make a small bet to trap em , then attack at the river!..if it doesent come then GL to you.
9. Also very similiar to #8 , hope for the 4 0r 7 to pair , then follow the same strategy...lure them in very slowly....then POUNCE like a wounded tiger with the broken claw thingy.
10. Ahh....very dangerous hand....because you have a GREAT draw.... BUT if the club doesent come then your shit outta luck....so this hand is Ok to play if the bets arent 2 high....because your just hoping to outdraw some1 , its risky..... but i say GO FOOOR IT!!.....if u lose then i say YOU DIDINT HEAR IT FROM ME!....

I think thats all the scenarios to cover, unless you want to add the 66 and 77 scenario , but i dont think its neccesary because 44 will be the same answer as the other 2.....

with regards to point 6 sfan, i believe going all in is not the best thing to do. You'll scare away players you want to stay in the pot. Yeah youll win the pot but for such a good hand your more likely to pick up a very poor amount of chips.

BSquad hit the nail on the head when talking about scenario 7

Scenario 11 : bluff say you had AKs/o non clubs since we are assuming it’s the
first hand in a tourney and we don’t know the players and they don’t know
us I might put out a 4x BB in mid to late position and represent catching the
flush if no one has bet yet, if you get called you still have 2 over cards and
can check/ fold after the turn of course we should have raised preflop
but this sounds like a family pot. The only reason I bring this up is AK is a hand
that you are more likely to be in with ie… would you really call other than on
BB with most of the Scenarios ?

Hand 1: I make a ludicrous overbet
Hand 2: Check/fold.
Hand 3: Check/fold, although I might peel a card to a really small bet.
Hand 4: Ludicrous overbet
Hand 5: See hand 4.
Hand 6: Bet about 1/2 to 2/3 pot size.
Hand 7: Yikes. I think checking, and making a 1/2 pot bet are equally good. Actually I like the half pot bet. This is a draw heavy flop, so the odds of everyone folding are about 0. Make em pay a little to draw dead (and hope they hit).
Hand 8 and 9: More ludicrous overbetting.
Hand 10: Try to see a few more cards as cheap as possible. I will be willing to call a few medium sized bets to try and hit the nut flush in a big pot.

Key info is missing fonz - 1) how much has been bet preflop and who has bet it (and where do they stand in relation to yourself)?
2) how many people have seen the flop?

Scenario's 2 & 3 generally should be chucked - if you have no reads on your opponents then you just dont want to play them. Your 10c is probably not the highest club on the board and you can assume that you will either 1) lose or 2) not make much money if your 10c is the highest card in a made flush - you are therefore only going to win if you get the NON club cards to give you your straight - even then you cannot expect good implied odds for people to call larger bets if you make it - and there could be a made flush on the board anyway. So 9/10 without solid reads these two should be folded.

If someone has the Ac and it is a 10$ or lower game then they will prbably call you with almost anything. If the pot is small (as it should be if you are seeing the flop with most of the cards you cover) then put in a moderate bet with scenario 6 /5 but not too high as you are planning to fold any large bet if another club shows. In early position though pass in low stakes games if the pot is low and in high stake games if the pot is high but otherwise bet.

You dont want to scare anyone away other than the ac guy and they probably will call anyway. You want to build the pot so that it is harder for people to fold.

If you hold ac - scenario 10 then you want to call moderate bets but unless you suspect someone has either kcx or kcxc then dont call too much as your implied odds for big profit are low. Building the pot a little so you can profit more if you catch on the turn is worth thinking about.

The BB, SB and if there are many people in the pot the dealer might be more likely to call with small cards - in terms of straights/ 2 pair etc these are the players to be feared rather than anyone who has raised preflop or flat called from early position.

qq (scenario 4) is something that should probably be chucked UNLESS the pot is large OR there are only 1 or two in the flop. You are Definately going to be up against someone drawing to better than you - someone with acx will have at least 12 outs from the Ac alone to beat you. If you have seen this flop cheap (playing tight passive) then FOLD any moderate bet and certainly fold to either an ace or a club on the turn

scenario 7. No-one needs advice on playing the nuts but BUILD THE POT WITH SMALL bets and thereafter bet what you think others will call is quite a good strategy

In terms of the other hands it all depends how many are in the pot and what the beting has been. Trips and two pair should be treated like flush draws if you dont catch a FH then be very willing to fold them. Try to keep the pot small - let the chasers chase but consider calling moderate bets to the end. If the pot is already large they are very tough to play - chuck in a small bet and fold if you dont like the turn is reasonable advice. These are hands that could cost you alot of chips but will probably win if no more clubs come. As soon as you see a flop like that you should repeat to yourslef "I will not get knocked out on this hand" - risk some chips - fair enough but dont let a hand like this knock you out. Your reads from what others do on this hand are worth more than your hand is at the moment.

Im surprised... well... actually no im not..... everytime i see a comment about having 'the nuts' ; everyone says "SLOW PLAY IT LIKE A CHAMP" Ok, several factors come into play depending on what to do.. Was there a preflop raise/ by who/ how much, how many people are in the hand. Unraised pot w/ 4+ ppl, i bet out the str8 flush, say 2/3 the pot. Several reasons. The set will call, possibly raise, hoping I am on the flush draw, and the hopes that they hit the boat, or a miracle quad. Ace of that suit will call a normal bet, maybe raise. The straight, it will typically just call to the river hoping that no more of that suit hits, and then would raise on the river. The low flush might jump real hard on the flop and raise my bet into them. There is no reason to check this flop.... to check/call/raise just screams sneaky play, usually a huge hit.
