I agree 100% with that. It helps to know the type of people yo're playing with, though. Obviously, that won't work quite so well against a skilled player.. but if you get talkative and cocky and give off a table image like you think you're an awesome player, then show them a bluff like that.. it can cause them to make loose calls against you. Check-raising as a bluff and showing it can definitely earn you some chips later on.. but, as everyone else said, it still needs to be used sparingly.

I personally love the check raise. As many of you have noted in the THF games. When played right, it can really aggravate your opponent. It gives your opponent a chance to put in a few more chips before you come swooping in and take the pot. There are a lot of different ways I use the check raise. And yes I do bluff with it ocassionally. I dont think that the play is overused, but I think if you are going to use it with any frequency, then you need to mix up the types of situations you use it in. Dont just use it when youve got the nuts, or people will start to realize.

I think that the real advantage to a check raise is that you make your opponent make a decision, and thats what you have to do. A check call, leaves them no decisions to make and doesnt frustrate them near as much as a check raise.

I agree with crapshoot that check calling is not usually a good idea. No matter how good your hand, there is almost always a chance that you could get outdrawn. Put the decision on your opponents, and let them make the mistakes. Personally, I think the "call" is the most overused play in poker.
