Default Know Your Roll- The story of a Tilter

Now when I say "know your roll ( or role)" I dont necessarily mean your bankroll, but that is certainly part of it. What I mean is know yourself, know your game, know your strengths, know your weaknesses. I found a HUGE leak in my game recently that I had been kidding myself about. That leak is NL hold 'em. I didnt realize this leak until I made the switch to limit. You see, being the ultra aggressive ( in life, not necessarily poker) wanne-be Alpha Male that I am I chose NL over limit to satisfy my physche. " NL is a game for REAL men, limit is for panzies" I would say in my head. Totally ignoring the fact the when things were running good I was the man, when they were running bad it was TILT CITY. I mean, I might as well say " Hello, my name is FrankyDaPit, and I am a Tilter" I had to realize that poker was different than any venture I had been a part of in my life ( mostly sports). See, when I lost a wrestling match or something, I would go balls to the walls for days on end to make myself better. Sheer Aggression. Run, lift, wrestle, run, lift, wrestle for days straight, completely closing my mind off to all things not wrestling. And it worked. It worked really well. I had a hard time realizing the fact the poker is the exact opposite. When I used to lose, I would try the same tactics...." Okay, I just lost....enter another tournament, play again and again until I get it right" and sure enough, all that would do is make it worse. TILT CITY!!!! I have found that you actually need to do the exact opposite....chill out, forget about poker and do something else.....This is 100% against my biological and psychological make-up and it was killing me until I started playing limit poker instead of NL. In limit poker, I can't have knee-jerk reactions to go into power mode and destroy my competition like I would like to do ( usually with disasterous results). Since you can only bet/lose/win so much on each hand, I would slowly settle down and minimize my tilt losses, where as in NL, I would usually lose all my chips on the next marginally playable hand I saw.....And my bankroll, at least for now, is thanking me for it....its nothing to call home about, but it is consistantly rising and although I dont win as much on my good days, I dont lose NEARLY as much in my bad days....I am still a tilter, but it doesnt hurt so bad these at the limit tables. Thats my story and I am sticking to it.
