Speaking of AK, i think that the biggest problem with them is how people play them. It is a nice hand, but most of the time, if you didnt hit one of your cards on the flop, it is just better to fold em and pick another spot. Good players fold 80% of the time, and we have all seen or gone out of a tourney more than once with AK.

just my .02

More money gets lost on AK than any other 2 cards that are dealt..you may win...you may lose..but more likely you will lose to a pocket pair. Any pocket pair is favored over it..I just dont get how people will stay until showdown with AK even after significant raises are made...somebody has a pair!!! and it isnt you!

That is a classic fonz. Ok, I believe that these post have helped me get the right feeling about AK and I am going to look at those two cards differently from now on...what has been so frustrating though was not how I played them...they just never hit no matter how they were played and my opponents hit them at will...so I freaked out when I got them and scared to death when my opponents had them.

Thanks guy's for your inputs.

There are a lot of new players on this site, which is great! I consider myself to be somewhere between a novice and intermediate player, and having played online on a almost-daily basis for over a year now. Below is my basic strategy when playing AK.

AK IS RARELY AN ALL-IN HAND PRE-FLOP, and most likely you will see me limping in with it.

I see players overvaluing AK all the time and paying the price for it with an early exit out. Despite the high ranking of each card, it does NOT represent a pair. It will lose to a pair of ducks. Without help, it's rags. BIG rags, granted, but rags nonetheless. If you pick up no help on the flop, MUCK IT! Learning how to toss AK after the flop is one of the hardest, but most important, disciplines a new player can acquire.

Your right jrstobbs...if you don't flop them...then it just might be time to exit....otherwise it could be you exiting from the tournament.

On the other hand you could stick around and try to bully with nice rags and watch them turn into dirty torn rags!
