| | | | How do you teach patience? Ive been in arut for a few days now and its really annoying.Ihad a good stretch of play and then this.I know 50% of it its me and the other 50 is my split personality
But the confidence level is dropping fast.Im not afraid Im going to lose,Im just wondering how I guess and Im playing stupid.I think a big part is my patience .Its usually a given for me to be patient but the last few days its a chore. So maybe some extra sleep and less time playing will help.
Any other ideas on how to regain your patience?

| | | | Just feel like your not going to play for awhile and will take the time to study your opponents and take notes on them...do Brunson's 1 2 system and other reads on them to take up your time so you won't be itchy to get in the hand.
I would like to say also watch TV or play 2 games at once...but that is wrong...those are just distractions that will hurt your game!
Also play some music in the background to ease your mind!...if you cannot be patient...then you should not be playing...you are to tired or have been playing too long...get some sleep!...come back fresh when you will win!
The important thing is winning...not winning now!

| | | | Also I would say if NL is your game you might want to consider playing a bit of limit - it helps tighten me up when I am playing too loose at NL.
Otherwise take a small break and wait till you feel your confidence is up - then try again

| | | | I would say wait until you have the money to become less patient. That is, play tight until your chip/money stack becomes big enough that you can limp into those mediocre hands and look to the community cards to kick start your hand. This applies to both ring tables and sng's in my opinion. Also, if you are getting frustrated with playing one type, play the other. I usually find that it helps alot to change the rhythm of what you are playing.

| | | | Like Ben said, you might want to try some limit poker. I feel it is much easier to be patient with limit than with no limit. I know when I become impatient and go on semi-tilt, though I dont think I ever really go on tilt anymore. I know that you know how to be patient, and it really is hard sometimes when your not doing as well as you want to. But that is what separates good players from bad ones. Good players will continue to play the right way, even though tough times. | |

| | | | I agree Crapshoot...if you don't have the feeling like you can outlast anybody you probably shouldn't play. While sleep is always an option, I recommend doing something that you think is fun and doesn't require you to think that much. Exercise is also a good alternative. The idea is to get the blood out of your brain for a while so it can truely rest. Combining that with sleep is probably the fastest way to get regain your patience.
I posted on another thread today about trying music out in game, which I think helps a lot. But it's not a fix for extreme brain fatigue, which playing poker for hours a day, every day, can surely give you.
Some other non-poker fixes would be to make sure you have plenty of light where you play, and that you're not staying in the same body position for too long. Don't let yourself get too thirsty, or delay that bathroom break one hand too many. Little things like that tend to help increase overall stamina.

| | | | being patient was hard for me to learn. it was hard for me to ever do good in a multi table tourney because anytime i would build my chips i would play way to many hands and knock my self back down to. i found that listening to music and talking with the players will help take your mind off of the stress and wanting to win | |

| | | | Id say I play around 8 to 12 hours a day at least or more,no less til today, but the 10 dollar tourney is coming so maybe..........lol.I havent been working out like iIshoud and my breaks havent been long enough. When I work Im up early in the morning so Its a habit Ive kept even though Ill play until 1 or 2 in the a.m.Just starting to realize its getting to me more than I thought it was.
Appreciate all the advice and will put any of it to use if it will help.
Another thing I just noticed is my house is 76 degrres inside lol, central air is now on.

| | | | lol s13 and welcome to the forums
might as well tell you that one of my notes on you from 10 min of playing you and a little bit watching you play J0NAH one of my notes on you was - "impatient - exploit". It is something that we all have to deal with - however good we think we are - me included.
and god 8 plus hours of poker a day that is my idea of hell Xtra - are you a pro? There is no way most of us can play anything near our best for that long. Even making a stab at going pro i would only think of 6 or so hours a day max. But play those six at the most profitable times for 1) when I play best 2) get opponents that I can exploit the most
I would also add that impatience will often be caused by breaks in concentration. If you discipline yourself through playing limit or in some other way (see what crapshoot says). and will comment on this further.
I would adjust Crapshoots advice on reading strategy slightly. If you read it and it makes sense and ties in with how you play then it can emphasis concepts and give you a confidence boost great but if not - do not experiment when on the virge of tilt - it can be costly to your bankroll - ask Jones T
To improve concentration
1) play less
2) get fit/fitter there is a real link between physical fitness and mental fitness.
3) pratice things that test/strengthen your concentration - it is difficult to keep focus for online poker - that is an exploitable difficulty in others but an impediment in profitability in yourself. Find some other way to train your concentration. Chess matches (3hours or more of complete focus) and live bridge competitions ( again 3+ hours of almost full focus) heightened my concentration skills
4) try to play in an uncluttered distraction free environment. Always allow plenty of time for games e.g. dont start a 3 table multi sng with less than 3 hours to spare - winning it will normally take round 2 hours 30 min but you need a decent leyway.
5) sometimes multitabling can force you to play fewer hands on each table and focus entirely on poker rather than typing stuff in this forum, browsing the internet, watching TV etc. On the verge of tilt though as CRAP rightly says that can be dangerous. Also multitabling is more taxing/ tiring on the mind.
6) try not to tax your mind too much during tourneys - you might be able to multitable, do the crossword etc for much of the time but that will undermine your ability to focus in 1 hour or so. This may sound like it goes against point 5 but both are true in many ways - one short term one long. Playing in lots of pots can also tax your mind - lots of chips etc being in the balance each hand can drain your energy somewhat. Music can be distracting but it can equally keep more distracting activities at bay.
7) I struggle to keep focus for all of a big MTT and i get round that primarily by not playing in them very often. Thats why I make my home with multi table sngs. I think i spoke to you xtra during the THF league round 2 and you said MTT's were your strength - so your ability to consentrate must be reasonable anyway.
8) make sure that the outcome of any money game matters to you. That doesnt mean play outwith your bankroll but if you dont give a damn about the result of a 5$ sng dont play in one (more relevant for sng's than in general perhaps) but also in a 5$ MTT you should only sign up if you are committed to playing to the hard end if need be and think you have a real chance of making big money otherwise you could easily find yourself not caring too much and that leads to you concentrating less and can lead to impatient play. | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread
