I play heads up a lot during SNG's. It's a total different ballgame, so i understand why you are asking. If you are the chip leader, sit back and play your cards, I never go all in trying to win, I sit back and wait for the other person (short stack) to go all in and I call, only when i know I have the best hand. That way it's game over.
(I finally get to tell this story .. ) Last time I played i had 9 10 ... the flop was 9 9 9. Rather than going all in, I checked and my opponent checked ( I was hoping he would catch a card and catch a full house) Well, the next card was7, I checked, he checked. Next came a K, I checked , he went ALL IN ... I thought he caught his card, and I called ... Game Over, He did have a king and thought he had won.
If you are the short stack ... be patient ... wait for just the right hand to for it. It may take awhile, but it's worth the wait. If you are patient then your cards will come and you can double up.
I hope this helps

Grab a set of cards, and two cups of water, a teabag, and a small bowl of brown castor sugar (about 2 teaspoons) should be enough. Dont miss this out this is extremely important!

Now Deal Yourself two cards and two other cards. The go into your kitchen and open a can of tuna fish and mix it with some mayo, and come back. Turn both of the original hands over and see what each player has, repeat this step about 50times, you will notice that you you get a pair alot and a high card, These are usually what win heads up, however notice that when playing heads up generally most of the time both of you have very little of a hand, and during heads up play in a tournament the blinds are going to generally be very high. So if for example you are playing against an aggressive player, he isnt going to have a hand everytime he bets, he will be trying to steal the blinds, and increase his cheap lead. Playing tight in heads up play is not advisable, except if you are playing with low blinds, and you can afford to lose them from your stack. If you are dealt a high card for example an Ace with anyother card it is advisable to make a raise pre-flop and try and steal the blinds. You can afford in later play to play alot looser than you normally would in normal play with more than 3 players. Most online sites let you enter heads up SnGs these are good for practise and homing your skills into this crucial part of poker play, required if you wish to win during tournament play.
