Bad beats or bad reads? What do you do when someone moans about going all in when their AQ gets beaten by 48 after going all in on a 48Q flop? I smile and am glad that this being on-line no-one can see.
As far as I can tell many players suffer from either being too attached to strong hole cards and not adapting to flops or love to see flops as that is where they see a hand as being judged and get their chips demished when their trash wasn't improved by the flop.
Players overly attached to hole cards are often easy to read (players that only play strong hands and slow play them are a godsend) and easy to take all their chips from. If I was more evil, poorer or more greedy I would chase these sorts of players from game to game as they are easy money. Here is how to do it.
If you only play hands that are either brilliant or have this player in them and if it has that player in them you probably want to get in for cheap. you dont want to risk 1/3 of your chip stack on trash. But you know that and hand you play against the hole worshiper your implied odds are MUCH HIGHER when you hit a hand. You must be careful not to make it too obvious that you are willing to see flops on nothing or this player may adapt a bit but the fact that you are only doing this when that player is in them should disguise your play enough. Most players will not notice if you are targeting them and playing a lot of hands against them. In fact they may just see that they have been consistently winning small amounts of chips off you and want to play in hands against you and target you. Read their play carefully and adapt. You dont want it to be too obvious when you finally catch the hand that you have done this. With practice and care this will become second nature to you. It is only through being caught out by this that i learned to catch others.
When you win their chips they will say something like "74? how can I play against morons I am going back to $30 games" or something like that. They might even say "the one time I call you you actually have it" or something like that. They will think they have been unlucky - may even moan about it to their friends but believe me luck had nothing to do with it.
Along with the increase in paranoia that comes from spending long periods in a room by yourself on the computer I think players doing plays like I have described here account for many of the complaints about bad luck and poker sites being rigged.
So how do you deal against players like me doing this:-
1) watch out for sudden changes in betting pattern if they have always bet 60% of pot on flop and suddenly go all in or if they have normally called your small bet or folded and suddenly bet big - reconsider your reads on them
2) you dont need to do anything at the moment. The few players who do this play is nothing compared to the actual morons who just play the bad way you think you are going to profit from- consistent profits against them will more than compensate for occasional losses against me.
3) I never view calling someone with my Ax against their 2x on a flop of 228 as unlucky - I give them the benefit of the doubt. View luck as pot odds backfiring AA v 27 all in pre flop etc. |
