Default Mental Math

This is a good way of calculating your chance of hitting a card, say your sitting with Ah5h and your playing heads up against another guy who is short stacked, he makes a raise All-in and you recon he hasnt got anything but a low pair, maybe 4's you can calculate quyickly in your head the chances you have of hitting a ace.

2% per out per card

So to hit an Ace, there are 3 outs in the deck.

Using the above forumula

2% x 3 x 5 = 30%

this is good to use when you are playing real poker and cant cheat with a odds calculator

good little formula you have here....I am going to check this against the actual odds when I get time ( later at home) but it looks to be fairly accurate, especially for calculating odds on the fly.

Yeah this seems good. I've been trying to find a good way to calculate odds and stuff. Lately i've been trying the calculatem program. But this is a quick easy way when i play live.

This is fairly accurate. I'm a big proponent of calculating odds, but sometimes I get myself a little too interested in doing the math and I forget that I need to be focused on the game. It becomes a little distracting when I forget that pot odds need only be a rough estimate to help guide me through the hand.

Quick way to calculate odds is this: multiply # of outs x 2 will give you approximate odds of making your hand. For instance, if you have jd 10h and the flop is qh 9c 4c you have 8 outs to hit the open ended straight.4 kings and 4 8's and 2 cards to hit it. 16 outs total multiplied by 2. 32 or 32% actually 31.46%. but you can do that quickly in your head to check the odds of hitting your hand not actually winning the pot.

That's a good point jogolf, because even if you have good pot odds you have to put more consideration on your reads of the player you're playing and everything else. That's why poker is a game of skill and not luck.

Thats a nice little tool, but it is very difficult to actually calculate all the odds, including straight, flush, straight flush, plus just hitting a pair or better.

I hear that kikolo, but aside from just trying to determine what the nuts will be (for you) at the end, you need to think more about what you think will be good enough to win. for instance, if you have a straight draw, flush draw, and two pair after the flop (only in dreams; ) you need to think about what your opponent has and what card(s) you will need to make the hand you think will be sufficient to down the pot.
