Because when going against a pair, you want as many outs as possible, in this case with AdQd you can make a Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Two Full House, a Flush,
three straights(8,9,10,J,Q) and (10,J,Q,K,A) and (9,10,J,Q,K), then you got two threee of a kind possibilities, then you got Two Pair Possiblities, if two high pairs that 4's come up you are going to win the kicker, you can get two pair A,A,Q,Q, or a single pair A,A or Q,Q.
With AdKd you can make : a Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Two Full House, a Flush.
Two Straights, (9,10,J,Q,K) AND (10,J,Q,K,A), then you got two threee of a kind possibilities, then you got Two Pair Possiblities, if two high pairs that 4's come up you are going to win the kicker, you can get two pair A,A,K,K, or a single pair A,A or K,K.
So the Only Difference between these hands possible outcomes are :
AQ -> Has -> 3 straight Opportunities
AK -> Has -> 2 straight Opportunites
Therefore : AdQd beats 4s4c more often than AdKd
