Default How too play big pairs under the gun?

I find if i get kk or AA in 1st position i always flat call and then re raise, i feel this sort of gives the hand away and wud like some variance. Any1 got any advice?

With pocket Aces, Kings, or Queens, you raise pre-flop. It's as simple as that. Slow playing Aces and Kings only gets you in trouble when drawing hands and hands like Q 7 nail a two pair. (Hands that would normally fold behind a raise pre-flop have caught a big hand because you slow played your premium hand.)

With Jacks, Tens, and Nines, you raise less unless behind a massive raise in which case you fold unless you are in a massive chip lead over the original better.

Just raise with premium pairs pre-flop. Can't emphasize this enough!

I have to agree with Aro here under almost any circumstance. Playing at a full table there are simply too many people who can outdraw you with a far weaker hand. It is vital to isolate one or two other people to play the hand against as to minimize the liklihood of losing the hand to some idiot playing a 9 5 off suit or something. Doyle Brunson says in Super/System that aces is a hand where you'll either lost a big pot or win a small one, and anyone will tell you that winning a small pot is better than losing a big one. In order to maximize your chances at the former, I recommend doing your best to muscle those weak and drawing hands out.

On the other hand, playing 3-way or heads-up I like to get a little cute with rockets, or any premium hand for that matter. Any ace is a pretty strong hand heads-up or 3-way, so a pair is huge. I feel that there is no point in forcing people out when you have such a great hand. Play them weak, as nobody will suspect you for an ace if you don't raise preflop, and hope that one or both of your opponents hits the flop (but not_that_ well )

UTG with AA or KK is very difficult play and to play it properly one must know his opponents. I agree with both Aero and jogolfshots.

Too large of a bet will win you the blinds...too small of a bet will win you a "Bad Beat".
I try to figure out my opponents to see how much can I bet to get just one opponent and that is the bet I make.

It's "Aro" not "Aero" dammit!

Every forum I'm a member too takes a while to get it right. Don't worry, I forgive you this time.

I ALWAYS RAISE - ESPECIALLY IN ONLINE POKER BECAUSE I WANT TO TRY AND LIMIT HTE CHANCES OF GETTING OUTDRAWN. YOU ALWAYS REMEMBER THE TIMES YOU GET BEAT WITH KK, AA, AK BUT YOU NEVER REMEMBER WHEN YOU WIN CUZ YOU EXPECT IT!!

You nailed it there kittles, you always remember getting outdrawn and never remember winning with those hands. I think the worst one I ever had was playing a home game. One guy doubles the blinds...I look at my cards and I got AA...I pause and then go all-in. I'm a little above him in chips. He calls with AJ off suit and runs out a flush...oh my

But yeah you have to raise those cards especially in early position. Sometimes when theres only two of you left in the pot I like to slow play AA and KK but be aware you always run the risk of getting a bad beat in those cases
