Default Hardest things (2) to teach new players?

I have been involved in a weekly game that usually sits 5-7 players. Small buy in for chips ( $25.00 ). After about 10 weeks of play, the others get a little annoyed that I come out ahead every week. I told them that they need to learn how to fold...it is an art. They still didn't get it...

I finally took one of the players, a girl who tends to stay in almost every hand, and instructed her to play a certain way for the night. I explained the importance of position and her initial bet...and told her not to chase cards and learn how to fold. I did not tell her anything about odds, ect...Keep It Simple Stupid was the mantra I followed. She finally understood that going in early in a pot with marginal hold'em cards meant she was vulnerable to a raise and throwing away money from the players betting behind her. She also picked up on chasing cards, especially lower case, was not usually a good thing.

The last two weeks she has come out ahead...the other players are now wondering how she is doing it...I told her not to tell anyone...I still want to take home money every week. Just wondered why it is so hard to get people to play smarter? You would think that if you do the same thing for 10 weeks with the same bad results...you would look to change how you are playing!

I don't see a reason why you can't share some advise to the other players on how to player better by tightening up. You will just have to change your own strategy to continue to win. Once the table starts to tighten up you can start bluffing more and more. When you feel people started to get frustrated change it up and try to get a call when you actually have a hand.

I remember when my local game started to become much better. The best players always seem to be the most aggressive players who put other people to a test for all their money. Of course this soon changed and everyone took the same strategy of playing very aggressive and not letting these players push the table around. If you adjust correctly you should be able to continue to win.

yeah it is quite simple, in the weekly game I play in I have done the same thing, but in reverse order, the first few months I bluffed early and often, and would showem to. now, anytime I am better they stay in with rags.

Default beautiful

thats the beauty of live games as opposed to online poker... in live games in order to be sucessful again and again your game has to adapt to the situation. it all depends on who you are playing, your history with that player, so many factors that determine the psyche (?) of a player and thats the part of holdem that i love

learning to be patient and being persistant about waiting for a good hand what ever your position is the hardest thing for a new player. they are chomping at the bit to get into the action that they kill theirselves with weak hands.

I would have to agree that playin live poker is a beautiful thing... You can pick up tells on players and get a better sense of them, however online poker is great because it gives you a chance to see so many hands.

JI hit on it this game is patients, patients, and more patients. Waiting for the right hand then knowing when to play it. Laying down a good hand even though you've been waiting for it forever. And especially keeping control after an especially bad beat. Everyone always says as long as you have chips and a chair you got as chance and I believe it completely.

Call me selfish but I just don't criticize others' game or give advice in live games anymore. There have to be fish on my games, otherwise where is the money going to come from? I only discuss strategies every now and then with players of the same level. We know we respect each others game, and we both know we're just sharks trying to feed on the little fish. Just like what Matt Damon says in Rounders, we're not playing against each other, but we're not playing for each other either. So, let the fish be fish. If you wanna talk about poker, either talk to others of the same level, or those of higher level. OR here in this forum.

On a side note, guess how many poker books are out there!!! If those fish could afford losing game after game, can they not afford to get a book and read it??? The least they can do is watch Celebrity Poker Showdown on Bravo in which Phil Gordon will walk you through how to play hands each step of the way. If they think education is expensive, try ignorance!!!
