| What about "Playing with a Gut Feeling" Theory, Advice, Strategies |

| | | | What about "Playing with a Gut Feeling" Depending on postion and players at the table...and then of course holdem cards...How do you feel about it? I know that the odds chips are a factor...but...some players seem to get lucky with sets, straights or flushes. I try to use all the resources to decide but sometimes you have to go with your "gut". I tend to get flushes and straights on a regular basis when I follow my gut. Don't get me wrong, but if I get a strong gut feeling it tends to work for me. I do not overplay every suited pair, ect but i probably play more than most. | |

| | | | gut feelings and experience There is a lot to say about position, feeling, read, etc. as poker is not just a game of odds. I think Howard Lederer said it best, knowing the numbers does not make you a good player, but I think its important to be rooted in the numbers to get to the next level of your play. You can go for that gutshot straight just because you feel it coming but I promise at the turn you will get it on the river on average 1 out of every 11.5 times you try no matter how much you "feel" it (this is why you should consider the size of the pot when you bet). Also, there are some draws that come a lot more, like if you decide to "see you at the river" because you have a flush draw from the flop, you will get it on average 1 of every 2.85 times you try. This is the sort of "gut feeling" that many players get just from experience and you do not need math to tell you to call especially when you have A-x suited. My point is knowing the math will not "hurt" your play and it may even bring you up a notch.

| | | | It's weird, sometimes I get a gut feeling that I know I'm going to get in a hand that I shouldn't play, but I have to play it anyways, and I end up losing. For example, I just won a few big hands to build my stack, and I got 8,10 suited in late position. No raises come to me, so I call, even though I had a feeling this hand was going to be dirty. Anyway, the flop came 8,A,10 two hearts (not my suit of course), so I flopped two pair. I felt pretty good, and after the big blind bet, and 4 people called, I tripled his bet (trying to get the flush draws out of there, and the BB and another person called. Next card was another 8. BB bets, next guy thinks about it and goes all in, I call immediately, and big blind folded. I show 8,10 and the other guy showed ace 8. Last card was a blank and he took it down. I just knew it was going to be bad.

| | | | When you say gut feelings I am assuming you are talking about drawing for hands when the odds are not right.
I will only play my "gut" feelings if I feel it will help me win in the long run. If I am not getting the correct pot odds to make a call but know if I hit my hand it will put my opponent on serious tilt I might be willing to make the call. I will also make these types of calls to create a table image that I can use later to win larger sized pots. | |

| | | | table image and tilt I have to agree with Mike, to see a hand with that effect see the thread on strange hands where I played 24o and won that hand which I was expecting to just call to the river for advertisement. Not only did I win that hand but the desired result came where people did not respect my play afterwards and the table tilted more and more as my stack grew. Just my 2c,

| | | | Never. Its pointless. It wastes bets. Only make moves that are +EV. CK, that was an "unfortunate situation." Can't call it a bad beat because you were crushed, just crappy that it happens. But, if you wanted to drive out people drawing to the flush you might need more than a triple of his bet...
You didnt go into specifics but, example:
6 players limp. (6sb in pot)
bet, call, call, call, call. (11 sb in the pot)
YOU raise 3X his bet. (putting 14sb in the pot.)
If any player has a flush draw they will only have to call 2 more bets into a 14 sb pot (7-1) to make a roughly 4-1 call: He has 9 outs, 40 or so unseen cards, depending other players actions.
If they call they are playing correctly, and you cannot let your opponents do so...
just my thoughts.

| | | | I didn't call it a bad beat, I just said it was dirty. But you're probably right about the flush draw thing and me not betting enough. Still would've lost the hand anyway, but I'll keep that in mind next time.
