Dude, awesome question. Although I admire most of today's poker players, thier books are usually crap that is perpetuated throughout all of the strategy websites (Play tight and stuff like that). They never reveal tips or trully interesting things about thier playing. The best books are probably David Skylansky books. They will win you tournaments. Another great source is cardplayer.com. Thier magazine (also available online for free) has weekly articles by some of the best players in the world. They analyze specific situations and are greatly helpfull. I am looking forward to the new Barry Greenstein book that is coming out in the summer. It seems to be really interesting and it is supposed to focus exclusively on how to win money in poker.

I read David Sklansky's book "Tournament Poker" had some usefull information in it, but a lot of boring math as well. I know that mathmatics are a factor of the game but will not win you a tournament on math alone. I've also read Phill Helmuths book "Play Poker Like the Pro's" not a bad book has some good information but mostely how the great Phill won his titles. I had this he had that, I did this he did that.. an so on.. Phill does mention a few good starting hands, and how to play them.. But your gonna need more then that if your gonna win a tournament. Books are a great tool.. however, Expierence is the best teacher. GL : )

LilChip, I agree with you on the matter of Phil Hellmuther's book. It is a huge font with huge margins and it is obvious that he doens't have to much to say. However, I think the skylansky books are more practical and realistic. Although mathematics isn't the whole game, it will help you come out on top moreso than just gut instincts

I think that Doyle's Supersystem book is best to learn the game and odds.

But I dont think the other "current stars" books are going to give away how they play...

Howard Lederer's Video seems pretty okay. the 1st one is not worth the time unless you just saw ESPN's Tilt or an episode of the WSOP/WPT on tv.. it jsut tell show to set up a home tournament.

Second gets into more playing and etc..

I'm am currently reading Killer Poker Workbook for winners.. I will let you know how it is after I am done.

Anyone read Harrington on Holdem yet? I've heard several people say it's the best holdem tourney book written to date. I'm seriously thinking about getting it.

I'm a huge 2+2 FAN (skanlansky). I purchased Harringtons book a few days ago. I've only had a few moments with the book. ALthough it looks very promising and interesting new information.

As to the math of poker. It is essential if you want to become a winning player over the long run. You can get by with starting hands basic moves short term. But, I believe long run you have to have implied and pot odds in your arsenal.

You can't go wrong with David Sklansky. If you're novice to average I suggest "Hold 'Em Poker" and if you're really looking to make poker a long term hobby go with Brunson's system.

I also suggest "The Theory of Poker" by Sklansky, as well.
