some sites show you who has the best sng stats on their site or other peoples sites (leader boards etc) - on party the best seem to between 58 and 63%!

Wow 58-63% ITM... Thats awesome. With stats like that I would definitely quit my day job. I come in around 45% myself in the $5-$10-and $20 single table sng's and although i do make a profit it's minor. I agree that your average placement when you do come ITM makes a difference. I feel the same as you when the payout structure hits. I don't know my exact stats but It feels like I finish 1 or 2 far more times than 3. I'm going to look into it further to see how accurate my assesment is on that.
Stats just intrigue me. I love calculating them even when i don't know what the hell I'm doing. LOL... But certain stats can give you valid information as to which part of your game needs adjusting. I think anyone who takes this game serious and wants to improve should know which % they are finishing ITM. If the % is too low then they should seek further stats that will tell them why. I hear people talking about "aggression factor" being a key stat. What should the proper "calling" stat be? What about "raising"? % of hands played? Pots won with and without showdown? I know each situation is different depending on a number of factors. But there should be a "goal" or "common number" assigned to each stat that a person should be looking to strive for. (ex: Pots won at showdown.... I have evaluated this stat over and over in my games. When its 60% or higher I can almost gaurantee you I will finish ITM. When its 45% or lower I can almost gaurantee you that I wont finish ITM. ) Generally,I have no control over this stat. If get my money in the pot w/ the best hand and it holds up 60% of the time I'm gonna win some cash. If it doesnt i wont. But I found the numer that works for me (60%) and I try and achieve that goal each time. Maybe that means I will fold more before the river when generally I might have called w/ something like TPTK. Maybe I'm not betting enough and allowing others to hang around to the river when a larger bet might have made them fold on 4th street. Or maybe I'm betting enough and have the proper reads but its just not my day and someone catches the river str8 or flush when I did everything in my power to get them to fold. Regardless of why, I know what my number is and I think every stat should have a number assigned to it (albeit every persons "#" may be different depending on their style of play).
Sorry for carrying on. I tend to do that.
