Default Establishing and maintaining a bankroll

im still a very new player to hold em - only 2 months

the first (and still my fave) poker site i joined was pokerroom. I deposited $25.00. I did 3 or 4 $5 multi table tourneys - and lost!!!

I also dabbled in a few ring games. I was down to about 7 bucks. At this point i promised myself not to gamble with real money til i get better. So for the last two months ive been playing freerolls. Ive started to get further up the ladder in the tourneys and although i have come close, i havent won anything as yet.

But ive grown tired of the freerolls - some of the tourneys last about 4 hours+ and the winnings dont justify the time playing it (excluding the recent ladbrokes freerolls ive been playing with $7500 in winnings on offer). So i started playing with play money on pokerroom - and i started to do really well.

So, with my new found confidence (plus ive been reading a bit on hold em- i reccomend this to everyone) i starting playing 0.25-0.50 nl hold em on pokerroom. I played very tight agressive and got my 7 bucks up to 15. I then went down to 2 dollars (was very unlucky and got beat by quads). But i got this back up to 20 dollars.

After 40 minutes of playing i had my cash up to $50.00

I started playing today - ive slowly got up to about 90 bucks. Im trying to be as strict as possible with my own game - if im tired, i stop, if i feel im a bit on tilt after getting beat, i stop.

So my question is this (yes finally!!!!!), what advice can you give me for maintaining my bankroll?

What should i take in with me into a ring game - say 10 bucks for a 0.25-0.50 nl game?

for a week or so ladbrokes freerolls were amazing - i mean top 130 places paid in a freeroll ($25 to 130th place and over a grand to top two places) is great

but theyve stopped the promotion - they may start it again later though - any info on it let the forums know

i quite like ladbrokes though - its very quick - my mate only has dial up connection and its one of the only poker rooms he can play because of his conection speed

i'll definately have to sign up for it. i'm in the middle of selling my car and some alloy wheels just now as i've got a new car so cash is a wee bit tight. also away down to nottingham for the weekend in 3 weeks. once all this stuff is out the way i'll be playing alot more, especially tournaments and low stake real money games. have to take advantage of all these promotions, like $15 free and 25% sign up bonuses etc.

do you play your real money games mostly on the sites that give you the sign up deals or pokerroom?

hey magpie. Good to see someone else that's even heard of uk-poker. Whenever I mention it no-ones heard of it and it's never in any site list I can find. Not sure how I found it myself actually.

Also, as you're in Bath you're not too far away from me. Do you know anywhere to play live?

Getting back to the subject, I started out on uk-poker with $10 and played in 0.05/0.10c ring games. After losing this a couple of times I made my first profit and realised how to play online. In the first 6 months I managed to get my bankroll up to $500+ playing on low stake tables. Once I got to $50 I moved up to 0.10/0.20. Since then I think it's good to have at least 100 x the BB at any ring game. i.e. if you wanted to play at a $1/$2 table I would want to have $200 in my account

If I can't beat a level I will go back down a level to try and win back the money I lost at the higher level and try again.

I don't know whether it was beginners luck though as after the first 2 weeks of playing I went on a 6 month winning streak where I played approx 4 nights a week and never once ended up down. Since then though things have changed somewhat. I'm just about up for the past month but it's been tight so I've gone back to playing low stake tables again but ones with plenty of preflop raising a big pots.

Basically, what I'm trying to say not very well is always play within your budget and never be afraid to take a step downwards.

P.S. Let me know magpie
