Default When playing in a 5 person sit and go limit tourney

ive mostly been playing ring games and multi tqable tournaments - either way there has always been about 7 - 10 people at the table

i tried a sit and go tourny at triple eight and i got ripped apart. I obviously knew that the strategy would be different - eg. certain cards you would play and certain cards you still wouldnt.

the two chip leaders called and raised every hand for like the first 30 hands.
When there was a pair on the board - the winner had a pair and queen high or whatever. I had folded before as i had an ace queen with nothing by the turn

what strategy do you use at a 5 table - be it limit or no limit?

You have to be super tight. I usually play in 10 player sit and goes, and I have found the best way to make money is to play only prime hands until there are about 5 players left. just wait for your hands and then make big bets with them.
It can backfire if you catch bad beats or don't catch any good cards that toruney, but in the long run you will make money from it.

i agree with jimbo. i decided to give one of these tournaments a go on The Gaming Club. played a $2 + $0.50 buy in, with 10 players in total at the table. payouts were 1st - $10 2nd - $6 3rd - $4. in my very first tournament i got to the last 4, was second behind chip leader at this stage and went all in with him (stupid move as 2 other players at the table were going to be eaten up by the blinds within the next few hands but i was going for glory) ... anyway lost and came in 4th. i wasn't happy with that at all so right away i entered into another on, exactly the same and won it. i'd say that these single table tournaments are the easyest(<--- i cant remember how to spell that, a mental block or something. is that right?) way of increasing your bankroll as apposed to ring games and multi tabel tourneys.

I tend to finish top 3 in most single table tournies I play in. I usually play tight at the beginning unless I've got the nuts or a read on someone in which case I'll lossen up for that hand and bet big obviously.

I find this usually gives a table impression that I'll only play the nuts or premium hands. I then use this to bluff quite a lot in position (on the button). I steadily raise my stack until I'm happy that I'll still be there even if I can't play the next 20+ hands or so. By this time a lot of the lower stacks will have usually gone out as a lot of players panic and think they have to double up as soon as they've lost half their stack, and therefore will play A4 happily.

Not sure if anything I've said is making any sense having just re-read it. Sorry if it doesn't.

Basically, play tight agreesive and if you're down to the last 4 or so try not to play against the other big stacks. Be happy to see other big stacks taking out the smaller stacks and therefore putting you in the money.

easiest

since this post ive had a little more experience with this - through playing 5 player tourneys with my friends

i basically just drop what i usually play by a few cards - eg - if i usually play only high suited cards in middle position id maybe drop down to like 6 or 7
