Hilarious!!

Yes - Zom is known for paying off others for playing totally crappy to his aces, or kings, etc. Not sure I'd try to build a whole poker career around that, though!!!

yep billy - hand histories are the key - both in closing leaks and in hand analysis. Few people do this but it is the best way to improve your game

Wow, thanks for all the replies everyone. Patience is something that comes naturally, and I do fold pretty much everything that doesn't add up to 21 pre-flop...and that alone won me 40 bucks last night in a 11 person game (took 3rd). Anyway, I just ordered the 1st 3 seasons of the WPT on DVD, and would also like to get some books as well. Besides the one mentioned which ones seem to be the most helpful. I've browsed through quite a few, and been discouraged with all the numbers/pot odds stuff, as though I'm not great with numbers. Where should I start?

I've never read a poker book before. I just got better by playing and playing. I played with play money for about 6-8 months, and I've been playing with real money for about 17 months. I think back to when I played play money and when I was just starting out at real money and I was absolutely horrible. I've looked at some of my earliest posts here on THF, and I was a complete idiot. But through countless hours of practice, I've gotten to be a much better player. I do try to read as many online articles as I can. One good site you should check out is http://www.pokertrails.com/articles/main.php. It has a lot of well written articles by professional players.

Other than that, what has been said is great advice. Patience is huge. Skills like reading and really just knowing what to do and when to do it will all come with experience. Like I said before, I haven't read any books, but I'm sure they will help you a lot, especially since most poker books (as I understand) are directed towards the newer players.

If you are not great with numbers I suggest you get some software that does the math for you. It will calculate your outs, pot odds an most importantly of all it will tell you when you have the nuts.

Just wondering if you could point to one thing that helped you drastically improve your game, especially when you were just getting started.
Patience and folding will go a loooooooong way towards keeping you from going broke, when I see about 20% of the flops I seem to do pretty good, when I lose patience and see more flops I generally start losing.

Memorize what the top 10 starting hands are, that way if you get a AJ you'll know if it's a better hand than KK... you'd be surprised how many players will go in with hands they thought were great, but are just so-so starting hands.

Read "The Everything Texas Holdem" book. It's a great starter book, I've read it 3 times and always pick up something new.

Memorize the odds for a few of the top hands - open ended straight draws, open ended straight flushe draws, looking for a full house when the board pairs.... etc... There's about 5-6 hands to memorize odds for, both on the turn and the river. That way when you've got 2 hearts, and the flop hits 2 hearts you'll know what your chances of getting you flush by the river.

play, play, play. Unfortunately I've found it difficult to practice with play money, people on play money games will go all in with any hand, and that's no way to learn. Sign up at a room, and play in low stakes games (1 - 2 cent blinds...) you'll still get maniacs, but a lot less than in the play games.

Good luck! I'm still new-ish, and trying to learn enough patience to win consistantly... wait for the good hands and remember that second best hands usually end up second best at the showdown.
