Patience and folding will go a loooooooong way towards keeping you from going broke, when I see about 20% of the flops I seem to do pretty good, when I lose patience and see more flops I generally start losing.
Memorize what the top 10 starting hands are, that way if you get a AJ you'll know if it's a better hand than KK... you'd be surprised how many players will go in with hands they thought were great, but are just so-so starting hands.
Read "The Everything Texas Holdem" book. It's a great starter book, I've read it 3 times and always pick up something new.
Memorize the odds for a few of the top hands - open ended straight draws, open ended straight flushe draws, looking for a full house when the board pairs.... etc... There's about 5-6 hands to memorize odds for, both on the turn and the river. That way when you've got 2 hearts, and the flop hits 2 hearts you'll know what your chances of getting you flush by the river.
play, play, play. Unfortunately I've found it difficult to practice with play money, people on play money games will go all in with any hand, and that's no way to learn. Sign up at a room, and play in low stakes games (1 - 2 cent blinds...) you'll still get maniacs, but a lot less than in the play games.
Good luck! I'm still new-ish, and trying to learn enough patience to win consistantly... wait for the good hands and remember that second best hands usually end up second best at the showdown.
