Default Interview with Shirley Rosario of www.poker-babes.com

these questions are in no particular order
The questions and answers are also in the attached word document

Question : (From fonzerelli_79)

What's the most frustrating aspect of being a prop player?

Answer :

The most frustrating aspect is when I have to get up from a game when I don't want to. A props job is to help get games started and help keep them going. If we aren't doing that, we can sit in a game as long as there isn't a board. There have been times when I am sitting at the table with a maniac and he is on a rush. I know he will eventually lose his chips. I just have to sit there and wait for him to do it. It's a real bummer when I have to get up to give another player the seat or get up to start a new game before the maniac has had a chance to give me his chips.

Question : (From Barron40)

Does your strategy at a real table change greatly when playing against people that mainly play online?

Answer :

I don't think it changes much. Online players are good, bad, weak, tight, aggressive, etc. just like real table players. You should study the players at the table and play against the weaker opponents as often as you can.

Question : (From BlackstoneV1)

Do you feel you play more/less hands online then live play?

Answer :

My percentage of hands played is probably the same.

Question : (From fonzerelli_79)

Everyone here dreams of playing poker full time. As someone who does this, is it as good as it sounds or do you get sick of it just like any other job?

Answer :

I love my job, but there are times when it is frustrating and tiring. I know a lot of people dream of playing poker full time, but it is a tough job. It takes a certain type of person to be able to handle the highs and lows of playing poker for a living.

Question : (From xtra)

These questions all relate to the same thing so have been grouped together J

How did you know you were good enough to be a professional?
What steps do you recommend taking to become a professional?
Do you believe reading books is necessary to becoming a professional?
If yes,
What books do you recommend reading to help improve your game?
If you weren't a professional poker player what would you be doing?

Answer :

I am not sure if anybody "knows" they are good enough. A player might be consistently beating the games they are playing and might "think" they are good enough. Then they might decide to take the big leap in becoming a professional player. That is what I did…..I took a leap. After a few months of doing it, I knew that I made the right move.

Studying poker is necessary if you want to be successful. You can read books, read websites, watch poker on television, participate in forums, etc. You will never be a very good player unless you try and improve your game and yourself. You do this by putting hours in and studying.

If I wasn't a professional poker player, I would still be involved in the business. Poker is a part of me. My website www.poker-babes.com has been very successful and has awarded me luxuries that I might not have otherwise. In all honesty, I am probably a better website operator than I am a poker player.

Question :(From Stokenut)

Is there more money to be made online these days rather than at B&M
casinos?

Answer :

There is money to be made in B&M casinos and by playing online. You need to choose which one suits your style of play better. I know that I am more successful in tournaments online. I am more aggressive when I am playing online tournaments. However, in ring games, I am more successful when sitting in a B&M casino because I tend to focus more.

Question : (From fonzerelli_79)

Youve just won your second seat to this year's WSOP. Have you ever played at the WSOP before?

How do you think you will do in this year's event?

Answer :

I won my way into the World Series of Poker last year. I have been successful in No Limit tournaments and I know what I need to do to try and win an event. When I played the big one last year, I didn't apply what I knew. I wanted to survive through day one and I didn't play my usual game. It really cost me. I am not sure if I will last longer than I did last year, but I do know that I will walk away from it feeling like I played my game. This year, I will not try and "survive". I will fight to win!!

Question : (From fonzerelli_79)

We've had a lot of discussions about the WSOP here lately and how some believe the format should be changed to a league or ranking system for qualification. We aren't disputing that whoever lifts this title this year will be a good poker player however do you agree that with more and more participants every year, luck is going to play a bigger part in deciding who wins it.

What are your views on this?

Answer :

A lot of the appeal of the World Series of Poker is that anybody can win. If there was a ranking system, the event would not be the same. Luck is a factor in tournaments and it always will be. I can not think of one champion who did not get lucky a few times in their road to victory.

Question : (From Jvelez)

How do you manage to concentrate 8 hours a day on odds, your opponents, the cards, with the least distraction possible?

Answer :

Focus is one of the most important characteristics a successful player should have. It is a struggle for me to pay attention, but I do what I can to keep myself in the game at all times. If my mind starts to wander, I remind myself how important it is to pay attention. Once in awhile, I have to get up and take a walk. A ten minute break from the table can do wonders.

Question :(From ScotiaTheOne)

When you were rising up through the ranks of poker, who was your inspiration?

Answer :

There are a few tournament poker players that are great. Phil Ivey, Ted Forrest, Daniel Negraneu are just a few of them. I might like a move they made in a certain situation, but I wouldn't say that any of them inspire me. I am inspired by my best friend and mentor, Steve Badger. Many people might not even know his name, but he is the most well rounded poker player I know. He knows how to play all the games well, but more importantly, he knows what it takes to be a great poker player. He knows that it is what you do when you are away from the table that sets you apart from the other players. He taught me how to manage my bankroll, what I should do to prepare for a tournament, and how it is not about the "big score." He taught me the valuable lessons that you don't see on television.

Question : (From sfan)

How would you rank yourself against the top 100 poker players in the world?

Answer :

I am not even in their ballpark, but it is something I am working on.

Question : (From Cowboy)

Some like to have players that don't know much about smart play at the tables because they are easy money. Some think that people who play too reckless ruin the game because they can hit with rags that you could never put them on. And when reckless people travel in packs you have no shot.

If you were at a table with 9 seats, of the 8 remaining seats how many would you have that play smart and how many would you have that play reckless?

Answer :

I would sit at a table with eight people who are reckless. If there are only two people who play badly on your table, then the six remaining players usually split up the two people's money. If there are eight idiots at the table, then the money is yours for the taking. I know the dynamics of the games will change and it will be frustrating, but if you could sit in a game with eight clowns every time you play poker, you should make a bundle.

Question : (From QueenMcQueen)

Being a woman, do you often run into situations where men either think they can roll over you and not take you seriously, or don't even want you at their tables?

Answer :

Absolutely, but it works to my advantage most of the time. When I first started playing poker, I used to use the "woman" thing all the time. I would be able to pick up extra bets in a variety of ways. Sometimes, a player might want to run over the "girl" and they would play recklessly. Another player might be the gentleman type and check a hand that they should bet. All the bets added up to extra money earned. Things have calmed down a bit because a lot of players know who I am, but once in awhile I still get an extra bet.

Many thanks to Shirley Rosario of www.poker-babes.com for takling the time to answer our questions

Wow. Shirley is awesome. I just glanced around her site and the profiles of the "well-known" poker players and the opinions are amazing. I love her already because Phil Ivey is one of her favorite players! Phil Ivey is the one of the many reasons why I play poker. Hopefully I can play with him one day. But the entire interview idea was awesome Fonz.

That was really interesting reading all of her answers. Thanks for setting that up Fonz. I know that you know this, but any other players like Shirley you could possibly get would be fantastic.
