Default anyone who plagiarises is risking being banned from the site

We have said time and time again that if you are going to copy a post from elsewhere written by someone else you MUST 1) identify that it is not your own 2) provide a link if it is possible to do so 3) if it can be established say who actually wrote it.

Really you should not include the actual article in your post but anyone who does this with the information above included will be treated with a lot more leniency than otherwise. It may sound like I am being an ass but I have to protect the interests of the site.

It is a wide held misconception that any text that can be accessed free IS free but that is simply not the case. Under both UK and US copyright law only a small amount text that does not form a substantial part of an article could be copied and even then it would have to be identified and referenced appropriately. In other words even if you include proper references if you are quoting more than 2 or three lines of text then you are risking both yourself and the site as being liable for infringement of intellectual property rights (I.E YOU ARE BREAKING THE LAW). So don’t do it!

Finally if you are going to just rehash someone else’s ideas and put it in your own words then you should at least say whose ideas you are rehashing – otherwise you are plagiarising.

We have warned people many times in the past but I can assure you that anyone who doesn’t heed this warning will find that there will be consequences this time! And anyone who copies posts repeatedly will find themselves banned. Similarly anyone who I have sent a warning to by PM today who repeat offends will be banned.

I appreciate that people who have posted these posts may have had good intentions but in acting as they have done they are putting the site at jeopardy.

The final point I would like to make concerns the monthly competition for best post. I have discovered that several people who were nominated for previous monthly competitions had been nominated with posts that they had copied from other internet sites. It is one thing to post something for other peoples interest it is another to try to profit from someone else’s ideas! I would have thought that players would have the decency to PM fonz or otherwise ask for their nomination to be removed in these circumstances. We have yet to check the current nominations for this month’s competition but if we find any nominations to have been plagiarised and have received nothing from the poster to ask for the nomination to be withdrawn then anyone caught is risking being banned from this forum. If anyone has accidentally forgotten to credit some other source for a post then we will not hold anything against them if they approach us by the end of the month.

I don’t want to discourage people from posting on this forum but it is important that people post responsibly.

i stand by this 100%
i was sad to find out some members had been awarded in the monthly competition by ripping other peoples articles off the web - these prizes should have been awarded to the members who had taken the time to write original quality posts. We should have paid more attention to this at the time but i didnt expect people to cheat in this way.

In short, if you didnt write it, link it. Give credit where credit is due - we wouldnt be happy if other sites started ripping us off.

Im sure youll agree this rule is in everyones interests (particularly with regards to the monthly competition)

Sorry to say that I have done this with my Omaha and stud stratgey guides. I will not do this any more. It will all be original information. Sorry if I have made anyone mad.

I hear you, I frequently post things from cardplayer or what not but I ALWAYS give the proper credit, more to insure my own credibility than anything else. But I think the reason I do so should be heard. I do that because those articles are written by professionals and it will ensure that that the information is accurate. I think that is very beneficial to get accurate advice. If I were getting advice on how to play poker, I want if from someone who is successful and the methods are proven. I cant tell you how many times I have seen blatently wrong information posted by individuals. I am sure that people who did not know better read that bad info, took it for fact, and now there game suffers because of that. I remember one occasion where i pointed out that the odds calculations were blatantly wrong and the person responded back "This is a fact, not an opinion" That person, who I will not name even thought I dont think they log onto the site anymore, was WELL respected at the time, and probably still is. My point is this, I completely understand your point and I understand your dilemma but by not allowing us to link sites, we are limiting our information sources to, well, a bunch of amatuers. So I think that we should find a way to make sure that info posted is accurate, even if that means deleting certain threads. I really wish we could continue to post links as that send the reader to the actual website, and would not take away from the advertisers. But if it against the law, its against the law but we should try to find some type of alternative. There is too much good info out there not to be able to share it. Thats just my opinion on the matter.

Note: now i know fonze said that if you didnt write it, link it but Ben said if you link it he will show 'leniancy' which means to me dont do it, but it you do you will only get scolded and not banned. So I guess I am not completely clear if we can link or not. If we can link, I am perfectly happy. If not, I am still happy, just less than perfectly.haha.

Really you should not include the actual article in your post

If you find a useful article put up a link for it. Do not copy and paste the article into a thread here. A few days back I found an interesting quiz at PokerPages. I put up a link that said take the quiz. If you have a good poker article or quiz or whatever throw up a link.

yeah i agree with this rule but you gotta admit its really hard to find the exact site where the person stole the info from because it could still be a combo of post all over the web... is that still plagiarising?
