I believe this was due to a dns error
Basically, this is how websites are hosted
* someone hosts a website on a server somewhere, which is just computer switched on 24/7
* that server has an ip address
* every domain name needs to point to where the website is hosted. This is known as the DNS, the domain name server. The dns is something like ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com. both of these addresses would point to the ip of the server
* Every ISP (internet service provider) keeps a large database (or has access to one) of what the latest DNS/IP-address is for each domain name.
So basically what happened is when i moved server i changed the ip address of my DNS zone. For me, and probably for most of the people in the UK, this change was less than a day so the domain name texasholdemforums.com pointed to the new server. For quite a vast number of people in the united states, the ISP's did not update for 3 to 4 days.
I was unaware of this problem until Friday when someone I host a website for contacted me and asked what was wrong. So until the DNS updated in the states on Saturday, American visitors were still pointed to the old server when they typed in texasholdemforums.com
If you saw a message saying the forum was closed and you had to go to the ip address then you were accessing the old server. I know that was a pain but it was neccessary for me to do this or we would have been in the situation where half the people were updating the old server and half the people were posting to the new server. This would be a real pain to fix so i placed a link directly to the new server
I apologise for the inconvenience but it should be the last of any major downtime
