A freeplay league where there is neither a buy in or prize pool does seem good - the fact is though, sites want to give out money, as that means there are players now ready to play on the site. If you win a play money tourney on pokerstars, great, you now have 1 million chips or whatever - but that means nothing in terms of playing real money games. Now, to make a game like this private, where none of the winners walk away "happy" (this would be by a poker sites definition, ready to play the real money games), and time is spent by a player rep to set up the game and exclude members of the site, it seems like no one wins.
An alternative that we may be able to set up:
Pokerstars regularly has those public 2000 play chip buy in tourneys. We could set one of those tourneys as something all "league" players would enter. Points would be determined by how everyone finishes in this public tourney. Now, if we could get every player to put up a small buy in at the beginning of the league (say, $5 a piece), we could then distribute funds to the winners without any help from the poker site. After telling them about what we are doing, they may be inclined to set something extra up for us. Think of it as a $5 investment that will last you a full month.
I'd be willing to organize something like this, let me know what you guys think.
And please, for the love of God, play in the ThirdBullet games I set up - their giving out $400 this month to THF!!!
