All games have to be learned separately. Read some general tips on it. If you're horrible at stud, it's probably because you're being too loose. There's no flop so you need a strong 3-card start, with good chance of improvement. Unlike hold'em there isn't a flop that you can hit or miss, so it's harder for beginning players to see when to drop out.
A very simple guide to playing stud is to play only aces, pairs with high kicker, 3-card straights 3-card flushes are they only hands worth playing. Play until the 5th street when bets double, and decide if your hand is still worth playing, fold or continue.
The most important aspect of stud is being able to consider cards face up and counting how many outs you have that improve your hand.

| | | | Re: Horrible at stud I prefer NL Hold'em. However I played my first 7-card tourney with 86 people in it last weekend and I WON! I couldn't belive it! So I might start playing more (I know I will). But it's Omaha I can't wrap my brain around. Too complicated -- too many variables -- too much too much. | |

| | | | Re: Horrible at stud One skill you absolutely MUST have while playing stud, is the ability to count cards. After each face up card is dealt, keep track of it, and who that card may have helped. If you see the player across the table from you has two hearts showing, yet there's another 3 in everyone else's up cards, chances are he/she won't hit. Same rules apply for seeing if someone has a straight. Someone is showing a 3 card straight? Check the cards that have been showing, see if they would help complete it! Of course, this also applies to you when considering whether or not to stay in a hand. If you have a pair and are relying on hitting trips (we'll assume you have KKxxx at this point), make sure there aren't any Kings showing!
The best place to take advantage of this is in low limit games, because people don't often know this key strategy. It is very easy to bluff the straight or flush with 4 cards showing, even if all of your outs are out there!

| | | | Re: Horrible at stud i might be OK at stud if i knew how in the world what a good startin hand is.. and when to chase that probably hand and when to lay it down lol.. i've got hold'em down.. i prefer NL hold'em over every game b/c of its excitement. and brutality lol... if stud was no limit i might be good at it lmao.. stud and Razz are the only 2 poker games i can't seem to get.. omaha, holdem.. fine.. stud/razz....no way ... so dont feel alone, i suck at stud too lol a lot of ppl do | |

| | | | Re: Horrible at stud well there isnt much skill involved in stud....not like u can push anyone out of a pot early so everyone chases to see cards...but yes u need to pay attention to all the cards showing on the board..say u have 3344 and your going for a boat...look around ...do u see your 3's and 4's anywhere on the board..as far as a good starting hand....high cards are good...3 to a flush....3 to a straight....... | |

Pushing people out of pots may not be very easy to do, but that's not all there is to the game of holdem either. Also, try playing on higher limits, I'm sure you'll notice that a raise preflop will probably drive a limper or two out at the very least. And don't think that this rule only applies to stud. Try playing pot limit or limit holdem or omaha - it's the exact same story preflop in that in limit there won't be too big of a bet to call preflop, and unless you are at a very aggressive and loose table the same will hold true for pot limit.
Stud requires different skills, not no skills. There is still a psychological aspect to the game, you still need to make reads on your opponent, and you need to know when you hand is no good. Granted it may pay more often to chase in stud, but you shouldn't be betting with hands like trips anyway...personally I only raise with a straight or better, and will only call bets when I have two pair, trips, or a very strong draw. Raising or betting with anything worse than a straight is only asking for trouble, sure you may have your opponents beat at the moment but look at all of the draws they may have...it doesn't make any sense to bet.

| | | | Re: Horrible at stud I've been reading the posts for stud, does anyone know if there is a chart (or something similar) for good starting hands? I found a good one for Hold 'Em, but have seen nothing for stud. I have not one a single game playing stud, so I know its my inablility to figure out which cards are the strongest to start.
Thanks!
