10 full buy ins is a pretty good rule of thumb. So pick what stakes you want to start at, find out the full buy in for NL and multiply it by 10-15. For limit, pick the stakes you want and multiply the big bet by 300.

The more bankroll you have, the more short term swings you can stand. And the more tables you can play if so inclined.

For fixed limit, if you are a winning player you need 300xBB. I play using a 400 just to be sure!

A common figure for NL is 20-25x max buy in so for NL10 you'd need $200-250 and NL25 $500-$625 and so on. The higher the stakes you may want to increase this to 30-35 buy-ins maybe more.

I'm currently playing NL10 with a $340 roll (was $310 but had a good session!)

This depends on what level you play at, what games you play at that level and whether you play tourneys or ring games.

Poker Room is nice because it allows you to accumulate PokerRoom points for tourneys as well as ring games.
