x-mas disgrace

poker room advertised a 19k guarenteed x-mas tournament. It was a 20$ buy in and got just short of 300 entries. There were extra prizes of TV's etc to be won as well.

Anyway the money got paid into the winners accounts.

So far so good.

Then they take all the winnings of the player who came 1st less 400$ or so (but he gets to keep the TV) and take away all the extra winnings that related to the guarentee.

They say that the 19K guarenteed was a typo and it was only supposed to be 1900 guarenteed and people should have realised this and further than the TV's etc were INSTEAD of cash prizes rather than an additional non cash prize. They have finally paid people what they won but to

a) just take $$ from peoples accounts and say it was an error
b) to still not really admit their error

is a poor show.

There were even reports on their forum of them banning players who were complaining about this on the forum.

Whilst they did pay the money in the end this is still a good reason not to make them your favorite site. Particularly as it was this same network (although not them) that had a WSOP scandal in 2006 (cash flow problems resulted in another part of the network not honouring tickets although offering to pay the equivalent value in a piecemeal fashion.

And I think there was a game at the Ongame Classics which had a guaranteed but was only a guaranteed if they would get the minimum numbers of players to pay for the prize pool!!!????

The reason why they paid the players in the x-mas game was because many many players cashed out and others stopped playing on Pokerroom. Taking back the 19k must have cost them hundreds of thousands and will have it's effect for a long time.
