| | | | Low Buy In MTT Looking for some opinions on how tight one really should play during the opening stages (first 2 hours) of these tournaments. I've cashed in 4 this week, but 3 of them,I had to take my sweet time around the cutoff to finish just inside the first payouts.
I have been playing very tight and consistenly find myself severly shortstacked 2 hours in. my stats from the last one I played are here... the pot I lost is obviously the one that knocked me out (my 10-10 vs AJ)
You finished in 221st place (eliminated at hand #3461602084).
123 hands played and saw flop:
- 5 times out of 14 while in small blind (35%)
- 2 times out of 13 while in big blind (15%)
- 7 times out of 96 in other positions (7%)
- a total of 14 times out of 123 (11%)
Pots won at showdown - 3 out of 4 (75%)
Pots won without showdown - 5
Is throwing away hands like KJs, KQo, A10s to raises preflop a little too tight? Or should I be willing to take a few more risks with decent hands? I consistenly fold small blind with bad hands and only call raises with premium hands. My AA, KK, and AK usually go uncontested even to 2xBB raises and I'm left with blinds. I have no problem playing like this, because I am ITM enough, but too go deep do I have to change the way I play? I should be watching Fink play more in teh early stages rather than just catching his final tables I guess. =P

Folding with KJs, KQo, A10s is fine, but if nobody had entered the pot yet then i will usually raise with these. If there is someone at your table who is constantly raising then i will usually play back at him with hands as weak as AJo. Don't be afraid to occasionally raise with a suited connector from the button or cutoff, you need to keep accumulating. If someone on the button is constantly stealing your blinds then you will have to take a stand with a questionable hand. Don't be afarid to take a coinflip if it is for less than half of your chips. Play with Confidence, Don't second guess yourself until after the tournament is over. Hope this helps.

My game has improved greatly because of what I learn about my own play and the play of others.
Hands like KQo Harrington recommends a 50/50 calling strategy. I know from experience that many players raise with KQo in early position, successfully forcing tighter players out of the pot who are holding ace-rag.
According to my own Poker Tracker results, my biggest money losing hand is KQo, by the way.
