Default Show or no show?

I was confronted by a guy the other day that got upset when I didn't show him my cards after he folded. Basically I told him that he didn't pay to see them. Then he really got beligerent.

I know there is some benefit to showing instead of mucking but I feel that it adds to the info other players garner on me and I'd prefer them not to have it.
I will, however, occasionally show a nuts hand but that is very rare.

So the questions are;

How often do you show?

Do you feel showing you cards helps your game?

I very rarely show anymore. About two months ago, I had a problem with that, because I felt that I needed to show so that people respected my bets, but I realized that in the THF games, players do respect my bets, so there's no real need to show good hands, and in the regular games on PokerStars, no one will ever respect my bets, so there's no need to give extra information to the few that actually pay attention.

I feel that since it is much harder to get reads on players while playing online, why give out any little bit more than necessary? The only real tell online is betting patterns, which will be completely exposed if you begin showing your hands. Still, very occasionally I will show in situations that might benefit myself.

I remember yesterday, I was semi-late in a tournament where you have to steal blinds to survive. I was on the button, sort of short stacked, but not that bad, and had KJo. Everyone folded to me, I raised into the blinds which were both big stacks, and they folded. I showed this hand because I wanted to let them, the possible bullies at the table, know that I'm not stealing their blinds, but raising with decent hands in good position. Now, KJo isn't that great of a hand, but definitely worth raising with in that situation, no matter what the blinds were.

Also, read through this article: http://www.pokertrails.com/articles/showornot.php
I remember reading it a few months ago, and though I don't quite remember if it was particularly good or not, I think it might help.

I think showing is OK in certain instances. If the table is too tight I'll show a steal hand to try and generate some future action. On the other hand if the table is loose and I'm getting alot of chasers I'll show a nut hand to let them know I'm not the sorts to play with anything else.

I never show ever. I used to show now and again if I'd been bluffing a lot to show when I had something decent but then worked out that they'd know I was playing with shit on the other occasions I didn't show.

Showing them your cards gives extra info for your opponent. I use Poker HUD so I see when the muck and when I fold on the river I fgenerally don't care what they had cos I usually know I'm beat!

I used to show periodically, generally for the same reasons bsquad does. But grum leans over my shoulder yelling NEVER SHOW most of the time, so now I don't show.

=(

Don't play with him anymore. I have this same problem with the one-legged Texan. He wants to see my cards every time he folds to one of my bets. I tell him to go take a flying leap.

The only time I show my cards is when I'm playing with my girlfriend. My friends can hate me for not showing -- but she can kill me.

I almost never show. I'd rather have them guessing, did I make the right fold or did I have a better hand. This second guessing themselves makes it easier to play against them in future hands. Plus the fact that has already been pointed out is that you are giving them extra information about your play. Poker, especially online, is a game of very small margins. Any margin you can get, however slight, over your opponent, will help you beat them. Any margin, however slight, you give your opponent, will help them beat you.

Now there are some rare occasions when I might show. When I have a royal or a straight flush or even quads, I might show to just show off. If I've raised several times in a row and finally someone gets tired of my raising and calls me and then folds after my bet on the flop I might show to let them all know I've got the goods and I'm not just screwing with them.

I never, ever show bluffs. If I do that then I'm likely to get called more often and that means I'm going to get sucked out on more often. The absolute only time I'll show a hand is if it is the nuts or near nuts. I want people to think I've got good cards every time I'm in a pot. And I want them to think I have the cards to back up whatever bet I put out there. For me this makes it easier to buy pots when I have to. If I'm caught stealing (or if I were to show my bluffs) then I find that people are willing to call me with real crap. And when you are trying to buy a pot, real crap can beat your real crap.
