Default Greg Raymer Kung Fu Fighting

I think this is a tidbit that will amuse a few of you. I got this information firsthand from a police officer who heard about this situation over his radio. Greg Raymer was playing poker at the Bellagio a week ago. He had just finished a game and was headed back to his room when two punks cornered him in the hallway and tried to mug him. One of the punks was a skinny guy from NY who apparently was trying to bankroll his way into WPT by robbing Raymer. The other guy was a relatively big guy(heavy and tall) who was not recognized. Raymer fought the assailants off and even did some serious damage to the bigger guy, who was seen limping through the casino on surveillance footage. Unfortunately, the poker punks escaped, but apparently many people recognize the NY kid so I think they will be caught soon enough. I think Raymer might have taken a souvenir, since surveillance footage apparently had one of the attackers losing his shirt.

That's a neat bit of information. Nice that you live in Vegas so you can share those types of things with us.

Do you know the dates of the next WSOP and where it will be held?

madman: Very much enjoying your posts - hope I may give back a little bit of this enjoyment

years ago" they" say that the safest place in las vegas was the Stardust parking lot. I agreed -since I spent many weeks sleeping out there.

Was there ever any news on the thugs that robbed D. Brunson awhile back?

Good for G Raymer - no need to lose to someone who wasn't even at the table.

Update: I just read this on Yahoo's new release today....

LAS VEGAS - Greg Raymer, the 2004 World Series (news - web sites) of Poker champion, apparently knows how to wield more than a stack of chips when everything is riding on it.

The soft-spoken patent attorney from Stonington, Conn., fought off a pair of attackers Dec. 20 at the Bellagio hotel-casino after he had finished playing a cash game of poker, according to a Las Vegas police report.

Raymer was returning to his room about 2 a.m. when two men approached, the report said. As he opened the door to the room, they tried to push him in.

But the heavyset Raymer resisted and began struggling with the men, the report said. As he was fighting, one of the men pulled out a gun and said: "We just want the money."

But Raymer didn't give up, and yelled for security, causing the men to flee.

A security officer said one of the suspects was a poker player and also recognized him from a previous incident.

Police made an arrest in the case but the report didn't identify the person.

Raymer, known as the "Fossilman" in poker circles, won the WSOP Texas Hold'Em title and $5 million in cash. He beat out a field of 2,576 in May to win the prestigious event.

On a poker message board, Raymer recently wrote: "I don't write this to brag, I just want any robbery-minded people out there who hear about this to know that I'm a tough mark, and they won't get that much off me even if they succeed."

Nice add on post. Surprises me that it is that easy at the Bellagio to get mugged. I would have thought that security cameras would have been watching the hallways of any room there, much less Raymer's room which was more than likely in the Upper Crust Suite of rooms. And another point: "Can someone just walk into a casino in Vegas with a gun and not be detected?" I guess so...

You're right Paul, there are cameras aplenty at the casino's and especially at the 'biggies' such as Bellagio's is. However, and this applies to law enforcement personnel as well (not just private security), one must always factor in the 'human equation'. That is, I see what's happening, it registers, I must do something, I pick up a radio and report it, the responder picks up their radio and acknowledges (and probably asks again for verification of location), and then heads in that direction.. By this time, the reported event is generally awaiting inclusion in the 'history books' and there has been sufficient enough time for another event to begin.

So, what good are the cameras for? Casino cameras especially have proven invaluable for identification and prosecution. If they do deter....great. But their main purpose is to 'solve' as opposed to 'prevent'.
