Thanks!

I don't think they're that important.
And I don't think they're that important in my opinion, either.

It's very rare that someone is so predictable that you can tell what they're up to. Much more important to concentrate on your own game.

Once you realize someone is doing something rather predictable, however - tells become very important. Also, how are you supposed to play your game without knowledge of how your opponent is playing his?

The other thing is a tell can also be when someone does something that ISN'T so predictable. For instance, if a player folds to your continuation bets 50 times in a row, and then all of a sudden raises back. Chances are, he has something.

That's so funny. It's so true.

Thanks.

Anyone else?

depends what you mean by tell.

some people's betting patterns are extremely predictable as mars mentioned, but i wouldn't really say those are tells. tells in my mind are things that your opponent does outside of betting/raising/folding. Supposedly there are clicking tells online, but i haven't really come across that.

Best advice is to focus on when people bet and their bet amounts and how they play monsters, draws, etc.

For me, I think if a player at your table is very quick to fold every hand and then all of a sudden spends time on a hand then either calls or raises the hand then they probulary have something. Its nice to be able to throw a change up out there so your not so predictable.

Umm... how is that not predictable? If he folds it 50 times in a row, then that's about as predictable as it gets.

Tells can be in their timing as Cali mentioned. Some players take a long time to bet or call...they want to give you the impression that they don't have much when they are really holding monsters. Others will make a rapid bet or raise to give you the impression that they are strong when they are really weak. It is wise to take note of these players and see what the timing was really all about. For others it might be just the way it looks...the delayed timing is really because they are weak and trying to decide and the rapid bet or raise is really because they are holding monsters. Take note of all this and also watch to see if they change up.

That is why I don't understand players that play multiple games...there is no way that you can really take note of everything that happens in a game if you are dividing your time between multiple games...in those cases you are only playing your cards.

Position play, betting patterns, past play and timing are about all you have to go by when you are playing against a screen. Chat really doesn't mean much, since they don't chat while they are in a hand. However their chat out of hand might divulge what type of a player they are.

When you consider all this...it can be very important.

And then you have the donks...there is no way that you can get a fix on them...that is why it is so much better to play against reasonably knowledgeable players.

Yes, the 50 consecutive folds are predictable - but were you expecting him to reraise you on the 51st continuation bet of yours? Of course not. He's breaking his pattern of constant folding - this usually means the guy has the nuts right now.

Phil Gordon suggests that there's 3 levels of playing poker.

1. Playing your cards. (like you said)
2. Playing your opponents cards.
3. Playing what your opponents think you have.

An element of moving past level 1 is incorporating tells. If you want to have an edge over your oppnent, regardless of how small, you have to be aware of tells. For any serious poker player "Caro's Book of Poker Tells" is a must read. Your opponent has probably read it and already has a leg up if you haven't.

Mostly in live games tells have made or saved me hundreds of dolars. I've found that online tells are less reliable since delays and such can be due to connection problems or whatever.
