I started a somewhat controversial post a few years ago regarding AA as a starting hand at the WSOP. It went on the lines like this..... You have AA on the BB of the first hand at the WSOP, everyone folds to the SB who pushes all-in,..... Do You make the call?????
Some of you, i'm sure, remember the post. The popular conclusion of that post came down to "Yes" you make the call. We even polled pro's and couldn't get a single one to say they don't make that call. They all said they wouldn't even hesitate.
Fink led the minority opposition of members who said "No" I wouldnt risk it. The debate went on for a while...........
So what's my point????
It comes down to the premium hands that Crapshoot is speaking of. The AA, KK, QQ, AKs, and sometimes JJ. They look nice but are still only a pair once the flop hits and you don't improve. These are the hands that most of the time do bust us out of a game. I would say that personally these hands account for 75% of my losses. Why? Because these are the hands I'm willing to go to war with. These are the hands I'm willing to risk all my chips with.
If they didn't account for me busting out on the final hand then most likely they accounted for losing a majority of my chips a few hands earlier. Then, I was forced to play a mediocre hand because of my stack size and busted out with the mediocre hand. Either directly or indirectly these hands will be the cause of you exiting a game.
This is the game my friends. Play it the way you want to. But when it comes right down to it, it's these hands that account for the losses the majority of the times. It's also these hands that accumulate the chips when they do hold up that gets you to the final table. Play them or don't play them. In the end it's up to you.
Myself, I'll keep playing them. I don't see them so often. I count on these hands in a game to acquire me some chips. Do I rely solely on them?.... No!!!
Do I risk too much with them when I probably shouldnt?..... Sometimes!!!
Keep the pots manageable is my advice. Don't overcommitt and be willing to let the premium hands go. Even when your gut tells you its the best hand you have to be willing to let it go if the stakes are too high. Be willing to take down smaller pots if thats what it means. They add up in the end.
As for my pocket Aces on the first hand of the WSOP.............................
I still make the call....... but I'd be shitting my pants when i do. |
