Lightbulb The Professor

Wow, I spend a lot of time here, thank you whoever created this site. I've been looking for a while to discuss all things poker and it seems there is enough traffic around here to keep me coming back. As you might have guessed I have studied math and statistics so if anyone is looking for an odds calculation or want to decipher formulas behind the odds, feel free to ask here and I will do my best to explain answers. I would like to see someone in the IRC chat once in a while but the posts seem to work well enough. Also, it would be nice if someone started a thread on poker tells that they have encountered that worked for them. Like the time a newbie sat down at the table and his hand started shaking violently as he re-raised your full house and you layed down and he showed the four of a kind. Take care,
Minnejohnny

What are the odds of me getting a job here in San Diego. I've been trying to figure that one out the last few months.

Thumbs up

If he can read, he can try to get a GED and go to higher education in library sciences maybe? Readers make okay librarians i'd have to think.

In my experiences, as well as talking with the players that I play regularly with, tells are ridiculously overrated. Betting patterns etc. are much much more important. I think I have based a play on a tell only once in my entire life, and I don't know if it was right, I hit my hand anyways and he mucked.

i think tells are a vital piece of information to have in a tournament. if you have a good memory, you can watch your opponents closely enough and see how they play certain hands. if you are lucky enough, you will be able to pick up some sort of tell from each player and use it against them later on in the tournament (given they are at your table later and you become involved in a pot with them). i think it is crucial to study your opponents during a tournament. if you don't pay attention to ALL of the players at your table at any given time during a tournament, then i think you aren't doing your job as a poker player. tells of course should NOT be the only thing you rely on to win a hand with a player.

I'd have to agree with Apod, I can't count how many times I mucked two pair (correctly) because I saw a newbie's hand shaking as he/she put their raise into the pot. Also, I can't count the times when someone has splashed chips into the pot a certain way with extra flair or in a line at me (acting bold) and taking them down with second or third pair as well. Tells aren't everything, but when you get to "decision time" it helps.

i cite moneymaker as excellent proof that tells are mainly hollywood bs. the hand shake is obvious, some thing that everyone knows. if a player has only ever played online then they should not be able to spot tells and they should have plenty... obviously they are not necessary, nor that important, otherwise shouldn't mike caro have won all major tourneys...?

Just a note on Mike Caro, I do believe his bank roll is healthy and he did co-author "How I Won a Million Dollars Playing Poker" aka "Super Sytem" aka "The Poker Bible". I wouldn't write off someone who Doyle Brunson calls one of the best draw poker players. Also, tells are not a perfect science, just information and imperfect information at that. I flopped a set once and had a guy 3 bet the flop and turn and on the river I called thinking I was beat by the way he was acting as my set did not improve and he flipped over his cards said "straight" and the dealer said "sir you have ace high, and one short of a straight", I won the pot but I could have won more bets if the "tells" I was getting from him matched what he actually had, there are no backups when an opponent accidently thinks he has something and forgets or does not want to check back at the hole cards because he is excited. This works both ways, someone read me for trips and bet into me on the turn after the flop came two 10's and I was in the big blind with 10-6, the straight looked possible to me by the river and I "felt" my opponent had it (correctly) and I reluctantly called with my 3 10's until I realized I had a 6 in my hand that I forgot when I flipped my cards (this made a full house--good reason to always check your cards before throwing in the muck). My opponent made a good read on me but since I didn't understand my cards it was imperfect information. Sometimes tells are imperfect but I'll bet on them.
