Lightbulb Bankroll Management Challenge

I wasn't sure where to post this, so if one of the leaders thinks there's a better spot, please move it to where it should be...thanks.

As I was reading benwiggy's thread ($4.10 to over $30, and then bust) I got to thinking about a recent podcast I listened to where Chris Ferguson was talking about his personal challenge to see what he could do with $1 online. He wanted to see what he could grow it into. Well, after losing the first $1 fairly quickly he started with another $1. After a period of time (I don't remember how long...1-2 years, I think), he had grown it to something huge like $20,000+!!

So, here's the challenge: take a dollar and see what you can do with it, and share your results with us.

Thoughts?

I would be willing to give that a chance.

So what are you thinking, take a window of time, everyone starts on the same day, and whoever made the most out of it wins?

The next question is do we want to all do this on one site, or any site you want ot play at?

Yes - we should start at the same time. Perhaps we all designate where we are working on it. That allows us all to play the site we want. Each participant would have to think about what limits are allowed on the site, what the type of play is like, what the accessibility of the games are, etc.

I think your idea would be fun. So easy to lose that first dollar though.

Yeh I remember that Ferguson story.
I might be wrong but I always thought he deposited $50 dollars in the first place. There was so much talk about how difficult it is to make a such a low deposit and be successful (when the rake and the probability are against you)
Ferguson decided to give it a go to see if it could be done.I think I heard the story retold on the Pokernightlive TV program, I'm not sure of the true facts.

I watched (part of the time) a guy go from $50 to 10,000 playing only limit hold'em. It took some time to get there (I think about 5 months) but it can be done.

So, another question, both ultimate bet and Jet Set spread .01/.02 cent no limit games, can we use play on more then one site, but use the same amount for a bankroll. Say for example, the $1 is up to $10 on one site, can I turn around and play that $10 on another site? I'd like to see that allowed, it would give us more freedom in limits we play at.

It would also help a lot if everyone who was in on this blogged their progress.

How about a 2 week sign up period, then we play from 9-12 to 12-12, an even 3 months?

Here's the link to the podcast where Chris describes what he did to go from $1+$1 dollar to "over $20,000".

Default Bankroll Management Challenge Rules

Ok, here's a start to the details:
  1. Each player starts with $2 (since Chris actually did it with $2, who are we to think we could start with less? )
  2. The challenge starts on xx/xx and ends on xx/xx
  3. Each player must declare their intent to play by xx/xx
  4. Each player needs to report at least once a week what their progress has been, including what sites they have played on and what games / limits

Thoughts?

Also, should this be an approved members challenge, or something for all of the THF members?

Well, whoever wins is most likey (I'm about 99.5% sure) going to be an approved member, but I see no reason to keep it from being an open challenge.

Count me in.

Couple of thoughts/suggestions....

1. Let's start this with the intent of utilizing $1, but commit up to 9 "rebuys" ($10 total) for this. That gives us a bit of a cushion as I'm quite confident none of us are Ferguson-quality.

2. Since this is an exercise in bankroll management, I think each individual should make all the choices.....which site(s) to play on, which game(s) to play, etc.

3. Reporting needs to be AT LEAST weekly, so everyone gets benefit of the experience.

4. Can we get 2 special threads set up? One that would be like a journal that only the participants can post into (but everyone else can view), and another that non-participants can post to offer encouragement, suggestions, feedback, etc.

5. Suggest we start this as a 3-month trial run, and see how it goes from there.

Bringing this back up, it would be nice if we started it in the next week or so. That way it would be over by the holidays.

My suggestion would be start it at 12am on the 23rd (so if you are up at 12:01 on the 23rd, you can start playing then), and go for three months to December 23rd.

Anyone who wants to join in, should speak up by 11:59 on the 22nd.
