Default Another $8-16

A hand I observed played by player X a few days ago:

The game is somewhat loose, not very many good players.
X gets 3s 3d in LP. It is raised in EP by an unknown to X (but is a bad player from my notes). Three players call two bets as does X. Five players in the pot for 5 BB.

The flop: 2d 3d 4d. EP raiser checks, MP bets, call, call, X calls, EP check raises, all players call. 5 more BB in the pot ($160)

Turn: 9d. EP bets, MP raises, call, call, X calls, and EP simply calls. ($320 total pot)

River: Jc. EP bets, fold, fold, fold, and player X folds. Final pot- $336

After the hand X stated that he was looking for the board to pair with his set.

EP (bad player) shows his hand.
Comments/thoughts. I will follow up with what he showed as well as my thinking.

This hand is impossible unless you are playing with 2 3 of diamonds. Other then that it wasn't bad. There was already a lot of money in the pot and he 10 outs so it wasn't a bad move to go for it.

Very strange play by EP. Why smooth call on the turn and then bet out on the river? EP lost almost 4 full bets by just calling if he did have flush (assuming everyone still calls). My guess if he is fairly bad is that he might have tried to bluff the river without a flush and just a big pair.

I wouldve raised if I was player X on the flop, you hit a set and the non raiser is the one who bet. The pleyer betting I'd assume has either a pocket pair, high cards with either the ace or king of diamonds, or already a flush, let's try and find out where he's out. Once that four diamond fell, I'm folding.

I think the correct play with the set of 3's on the flop would be to re-raise to see who is calling with a diamond, so if you hit your boat on the turn or river you know where you are at. Also, this would cause anyone without a diamond to fold on the flop. On the turn even though the diamond falls, you can bet again to see if the flush is out there (which in this game I can't imagine someone smooth calling the turn missing a big bet round) and you know what you have to hit on the river in order to stay if you are re-raised and the pot odds justify calling the flush with your set. Since EP just called the bet on the turn, I think that shows weakness or at least he is afraid of the Ad. The only thing you are afraid of is a loose player holding on to a straight, and I would take my chances as well. The point being is unless the guy who took down the pot has the Ad he folds on the flop or turn even with flopping the straight or two-pair. MP folded anyway so all that action between your set of 3's and the guy who actually won that pot would scare him out as well, I imagine he had a middle diamond or a straight. Just my 2 cents.
