Default Questions about Las Vegas

I have a few questions about Las Vegas. I have looked on the internet but I can't find much information about it.

1. Is Vegas dead in a few years? I have read that new casino's and off strip casino's are completely empty. Surely this will cause people getting fired and moving away from Vegas. I could be wrong about this but more states are getting a license to build a casino and people don't have to travel so far anymore to gamble. Also it is said that Macau will be the new capitol of gambling. More and more players are going to Macau instead of Vegas.

2. How's the water? Can you get a decent shower? I've read that the water is coming straight from the Hoover Dam. Is it clean? Is the pressure getting less and less because the water in the Dam is getting low? I like to have good showers.

3. Is there much crime? It was on tv that a guy got robbed in broad daylight when he was walking from the casino to his hotel which were only 25 metres apart. How sick is that?

Two of my best friends and my god-daughters live in Vegas. Here is the general impression that I can give you.

1) I don't think that Vegas will ever be "dead". Right now, with the turn in the economy, it is suffering. And lots of people go to Vegas to do stuff other than gamble which some of the other casinos here in the states are only starting to offer, or offer in a much more limited basis. The Strip is convenient for most people because it offers EVERYTHING. You can go and play slots in the Bellagio, walk to dinner at a 4 star restaurant at Mandalay Bay and then find a show at the Rio. The off strip places have to either make a name for themselves because they lack the convenience factor. With that being said, I know people who will only stay and play off strip. My Dad loved Binions which is an icon there in Vegas.

2) The water is hard but most of the hotels filter it through a water softner. Pressure depends entirely on the hotel. I would liken the water to being similar to German water. I would bring along a good lotion if you have sensitive skin and drink the bottled water.

3) Crime is up all over the States. Crime is probably higher in Vegas but with that being said, there are things to do to compensate/protect yourself. Don't wear a lot of jewelry. Keep your watch to an average Joe style (and yes, the thugs in Vegas can tell between a real vs fake Rolex contrary to what my brother Joe thinks). Keep as little cash and as few credit cards in your wallet as possible (and keep it in your front pants pocket-it is tougher for a pick pocket to get your wallet from the front pockets).
One thing I would recommend (and I learned this from various trips to Paris) is to buy a passport belt that you can wear under your pants- if you win big at the casino, when you cash out, make a quick trip to the bathroom and essentially hide the money underneath your jeans. I would also put in a piece of paper with copies of your driver license number, credit card numbers with phone numbers to call them, and if you have a passport keep it in there. Also make use of the hotel's safe. Most of the hotels are more than happy to set you up with a space in their safe or have one in the room.

I believe that most crime can be prevented through diligence and awareness. With that being said, I used the modifier 'most' and there is some stuff that you just can't avoid. For the stuff you can't avoid, do something to mitigate.

Also don't show up with a Camera around your neck I never had any problems in Vegas with pick pockets or suck. I mostly like to stay on the strip, because thats where all the action is.

If I do happen to win big at a casino that lets say I walked to get to. I will have a cab take me back and put the cash in the safe. I also had security escort me to my cab, or car. They will be very happy to do so.

don't go by yourself. Loners are easy marks.

And skele gave you god advice, but you don't have to carry your passport with you. You can either leave it with the Casino security and ask them to put in the their vault, or just leave in your safe. You will only need your passport if you win Big $$$ and you can always go back to get it. Just have 1 credit card, ID, and some cash. I usually only carry my 1 day session money with me.

Good luck and always have fun
