I certainly don't think his play was solid I only offer a reationale as to why he might make the play the way he did. I guess if he was a solid player we all wouldn't be asking ourselfs why he did what he did.
It's rare, if ever I will chase a low flush even if pot odds are good since I think the changes of being out flushed out way the investment to the river. On the occasion I might chase with both a open ended straight and flush draw and catch the low flush I might value bet the flush but most of the time if I get checked too I will check it down.
Part of my problem in this situation (if indeed there is one) might be my disciplne in not being able to lay down the hand in the face of a large bet or reraise, thus costing myself the big losses while only reaping the small profits when it does hold. Couple that with laying the hand down at the wrong time to a big bluff or a lessor hand who bet big thinking they had the best of it.
