Default Actuarial poker!

I am a student at Université Laval in Québec city, and I am into actuarial studies. Obviously, all of us love probabilities as this will be our jobs in the future to calculate them! So, of course, we all love to play cards! During a BORING class this semester, we invented a kind of two-player-poker that we think is very interesting and fun to play. Each player is dealt 25 cards out of the 52 cards deck, so we remove two cards randomly. Now, each player tries to build the best 5 poker hands he can with those 25 cards. when both players are done, we go head to head, starting with our best hand until we reach our worst hand. The winner is the one that won at least 3 out of 5 hands (indeed!). It is a lot of fun because you sometimes have to break some very strong hands to increase some weaker hands. For example, you sometimes have to make a full house out of a four of a kind, to use the other card to make a straight or a flush, etc...
We call this game Actuarial poker OR 25 cards poker...
I you wanna give it a try...

Ben

That is an interesting concept. You might want to check out Poker Stars tournys because they are having some actuarial tournaments coming up. I was trying to figure out what they were and now I know. Thanks.

You wanted to know what is an actuary? Well, it's hard to explain explicitly... Actuaries usually work for insurance companies and they are the ones calculating, for instance, the odds of certain type of people getting disabled, or the probability that a car gets stolen, the probability that certain people have a car accident and then, they calculate how much it should cost to insure these kind of people. For example, it's because of actuaries that men's car insurance fee are a lot higher than women's! Hope this helps!
As to the PokerStars tourneys, I saw them, but I have no idea where to find the password to participate... If I can find them, I'll be a part of it, you can count on me!
