WSOP Numbers The official count is in for this year's WSOP Main Event. 8,773 players went to battle for the title. That is roughly 3,100 more then last year's event. If just the number of additional players over last year were in a tournament it would be the third largest tournament ever held. The final payout structure hasn't been released yet, but early estimates are that the top 15 or so players will receive $1 million or more. The first prize money will likely be between $11 and $11.8 million.
The numbers are staggering. I can't imagine that this growth can be sustained, the field has to level off sooner or later. But if you look at the number of under 21 players that populate the internet just dreaming of the day they turn 21 and can chase their pot of gold it's hard to imagine that it will slow down significantly any time soon.
It is an amazing time to be a part of the poker world.
