Thumbs up Poker Players Alliance

Most of you by now are members or affiliated with PPA in some form or another. Please look for a recent link to: John McCain, Candidate for US President and send an email (one provided for you or write your own) to voice your opposition to the decision of the Republican Platform Committee to adopt language opposing our right to play Internet poker. It is so important to keep voicing our opinion on this. My choice for President has swayed greatly upon finding this out. Here is the letter they are using in case you want to write directly to the Republican Platform Committee.

As a voter and as a poker player, I am writing to share with you my outrage over the decision of the Republican Platform Committee to adopt language opposing my right to play Internet poker. The fact that this was added after its initial removal from the draft platform only serves to reinforce my anger over this.

I am very disappointed that the Republican Platform Committee chose to pander to anti-poker extremists who presented not facts, but hysterical, unsubstantiated hyperbole. The facts are clear - online poker can and should be offered in the U.S. in a safe, regulated manner, just as it is throughout the world. In fact, a recent study from respected academics at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Nevada found that U.S. regulation of Internet poker provides the greatest opportunity to protect consumers from potential pitfalls of online gaming. The current laws, including the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, do nothing to protect children and those with excessive gaming habits. Plain and simple, attempts at prohibition will continue to be failed policy, but licensing and regulation will result in positive social and public policy outcomes.

What's most important to me is your support for my rights. This support will certainly play a part in my decision on whom to vote for this November. I call on you to officially renounce this plank of the platform and restore the conservative principles of personal freedom and individual responsibility. I hope that I, along with my over one million fellow Poker Players Alliance members, can count on your support.

Thank you for your consideration.

Default Join your state PPA chapter and get involved!

I'm not sure how I feel about the video the PPA put together (Kaartkeizer's post) a while back - I think it's a bit contrived and too long - but just looking at the recent news should give every US poker player reason enough to join the PPA and get as involved as possible.

In case you haven't heard, the governor of Kentucky is currently trying to seize the domains of just about all online poker sites to effectively block every resident of KY to even access them. This is not only extremely scary for online poker, but for all sorts of free speech issues and civil rights in general. Click here for more info about this mess.

I am personally on the board of our (still very young) state chapter, but we've already been able to make an impact and get some great awareness and recognition during the recent convention, and we're working to not only keep online poker as legal as possible in CO, but to also further poker in general and possibly get a legal exclusion for it from general gambling legislation.
