Question What should I have done differently?

I've been playing poker for awhile, but like everyone, I'm still learning day by day. I had 9c8s in the small blind, and no one raised, so I called for the heck of it. Maybe that was my first mistake. The flop came 9 6 5, with two diamonds. I bet out.. I had top pair, and I figured if I just checked and someone bet, I wouldn't know what I was up against. But no one raised, just called. I figured I was against either flush draws, straight draws, or other weak pairs.

A jack hit on the turn that wasn't a diamond. I get out again, bigger this time, and again, just calls. No raises.

A six of hearts hit on the river. It paired the board, but there was no flush or straight possible. I figured the draws would drop out now, but I was worried that someone might have been flat calling with seocnd pair and got lucky and hit a set on the river. I know I should have checked here and folded when my opponent bet, but instead, I bet out again. And again, just a flat call ( I had driven out the other two by now ). He turned up AJ, and I lost the pot.

Anyways, here's the actual hand history, so you guys can see the specifics. Any feedback is welcome, so I can try to avoid hands like this in the future.

Only mistake I see is what you already mentioned... betting the river. I would never lay down 98 in the SB unless I was very shortstacked or if you felt the BB would raise your limp with anything. You hit top pair and a straight draw, and you had him at that point. A bigger bet there may well have chased him out but you never know.

Justpeech was watching a football game while playing, and didn't realize what he was doing and just happened to win the hand.

I agree totally. With the over card and a possible set out there i would have checked the river. If he bets it probably wouldn't be a big bet like 500 and you could minimize your losses by either folding or calling something like a 150-250 bet from justpeech. Just remember when he calls you down to the river he's calling you with some kind of hand. He isn't going to call your bluff with A high.
