Default Poorly played or just unlucky?

Was this hand poorly played or just plain unlucky? I realize now that I probably should have pushed the turn when I originally hit the flush after him betting $5..... I really doubt pushing $8 more would have gotten him to fold though. There was no way I could lay down the second to best flush on the river with only $8 left.... Sorry, had to vent

It is unlucky, but you did play poorly. You should not have bet the flop with just a draw and no overs. On the turn, you should have check raised him all-in. You are right in that he would not have folded, so you would have ended up losing anyways, but that way, you know you were all-in with the best hand. On the river, you could say your play was not smart, since the 4th diamond devalued your flush, but you could say it was decent, since only one card would beat you. It's a tough loss, but you should have pushed hard on the turn like you said.

I don't normally bet flush draws, but decided to change up my play this time. I figured if I hit the flush that they would not put me on it seeing as I bet the flop.

I think betting your draw was a good play, to bad abou the 4th spade.

I can see where you are coming from, but I just hate betting draws, especially if you hit your draw it still might not be the best. For me, I tend to miss a lot of draws and miss even more if I bet them, lol. Maybe that's just my luck.

I like to bet on the flop with a draw sometimes so that if I hit the flush, it will disguise it a bit. But when I bet, I usually bet a good amount ( much more than the minimum amount). I do this for 2 reasons. For one, I now have fold equity. If the bet is big enough it may push someone of a marginal, but better, hand. I know that would not have worked here but that is not the point. Second, it looks like I am betting to protect against a flush draw. If you get a caller and my flush hits, they may be inclined to bluff, sensing that I was fearing the flush. At that point, I make a large bet that they may be committed to call. As far as your play, it was okay. Nothing extraordinary to comment on, either on the good or bad side.
