Default Played Poorly I'm Sure

Ok, I know I should probably be ashamed at the way I played this one. The flop was one I was not particularly thrilled with. Any input as to how I should have played this is appreciated.

Texas Hold'em $1-$2 (real money), hand #1,186,556,398
Table Tokyo, 20 Aug 2005 5:51 AM ET

Seat 1: Simoda
Seat 2: limeymc
Seat 3: andersni
Seat 4: laitokakso
Seat 5: KrayZ2
Seat 6: StarlightCst [ ]
Seat 7: MasterMikeAA
Seat 8: WhoisRiplash
Seat 9: tom_da_cat
Seat 10: xaaaakx
ANTES/BLINDS
WhoisRiplash posts blind ($0.50), tom_da_cat posts blind ($1), StarlightCst posts blind ($1).

PRE-FLOP
xaaaakx folds, Simoda folds, limeymc folds, andersni folds, laitokakso calls $1, KrayZ2 folds, StarlightCst bets $1, MasterMikeAA folds, WhoisRiplash folds, tom_da_cat calls $1, laitokakso calls $1.

FLOP [board cards ]
tom_da_cat checks, laitokakso checks, StarlightCst checks.

I should have probably bet the flop, but quite frankly I played it like a passive little wimp. Question is if I bet and get raised what then?

TURN [board cards ]
tom_da_cat checks, laitokakso checks, StarlightCst checks.

Bet here? Was still worried about a slow played straight.

RIVER [board cards ]
tom_da_cat checks, laitokakso checks, StarlightCst checks.

Sigh. I figured I was dead.

SHOWDOWN
tom_da_cat shows [ ]
laitokakso mucks cards
StarlightCst shows [ ]
StarlightCst wins $6.25.

Unbelievable I won this in my opinion.

I do not think you did anything wrong neccessarily... In this situation had you bet on any street you would have probably taken the pot down uncontested.

You said the board kind of scared you and since you were in a multi way pot comitting money after completly missing a flop with AK that "scared" you is not always the best play. Any sign of strength hoever on the flop would have forced your opponents to fold and you would not have given them the chance to make a hand on the turn or the river.

Starlight, I would have felt the same way you did, and played it the same, right or wrong. Grum has been watching my play lately and noticed my fear in these positions. Specifically, if no one else bet that flop, you should have at least limped at it and you might have taken the pot right there - that is Grum's take on the right play at least- and it makes sense. A call should show you who is drawing for it, and with a reraise, toss your hand. ( generally)
I have been trying to use that advice lately and have been winning more, abiet scary, small pots that way.

Starlight, in hands like that, it can really go either way. You can play it very passively, like you did, and check fold, or you can try to take it down. With your positioning and the preflop raise, you probably should have bet that flop and try to take it down. I know you said "what if you were raised?" and of course that is a risk with bluffing; you might get caught. If you were raised, you have to make a decision on whether to call or not. You probably wouldn't be raised on the flop if someone had a really good hand and was slowplaying. The raise would probably come on the turn. I think the worse thing that can happen is if you bet and people just call. Then you have to decide whether to continue with the bluff. A lot of times, though not always, people with call those bets because they are chasing a draw and might fold on the river.

I think the way you played it is just fine every once in a while. You shouldn't always do it, but playing passively can sometimes be advantageous.
