Pocket 8s were ok preflop,

on the flop they were smaller pair but open ended, a decent amount of outs. The betting here was a little reckless but not outrageous since it helped to throw off the scent and get cash into the pot for when they hit.

On the turn more outs possible, but they have to assume they dont have the best hand, thus the call instead of raise.

On the river, they hit, and you paid em.

I don't see anything wrong with this persons play.

If you want to play a game where your raises are respected and you don't have clowns doing as you described you need to play a specific table type not a specific stake. I always look for the tightest table I can find along with the lowest pot amounts I can find. I have seen in the .05/.10 tables at Poker Stars they will respect the preflop raise even at that level and I was playing a little .25/.50 limit at Poker Stars tonite and 2 or 3 times everyone folded to my preflop raise and why? because they play tight and you do not have too many river chasers. Don't get me wrong you always have some, but for the most part you don't.

By playing at a table with a low pot amount and low percentage seeing the flop it gives me the opportunity to be the aggressive one at the table and 9 9 times out of 20 I am the one raising the most and winning pots without a showdown more often than my opponent. I don't know what kind of table you're used to playing but you might want to give a tight/passive table a try. You might find it is the type of table best suited to your style of play.
