| | | | Bad Play or just unlucky? Sorry, don't have the hand history - the poker software messed up.
9 Handed
Blinds 10/20
This is second hand into the tournament, and everyone has approximately 1000 chips.
Folded round to me, I am in the Hijack position with AK off suit. I raise to 100 and get called by the cut off and the button, both blinds fold.
Flop is K 6 4 rainbow, I am first to act. I bet 210 into the 330 pot, both call. The turn is a 2, no flush draw whatsoever there. I bet 350 into the 960 pot. The cut off calls me, and the button reraises all in. We both call and he shows 5 3 for the straight. (The other guy has KQ).
Now i've only been playing pretty much since the new year on anything more than a 'for fun' basis, so my question is is there anyway to justify the play he made, or any of the calls, or was it just a maniac play?
Thx,
Dan | |

Did a set or two pair, possibly even AA, enter into your range of hands? Fact is, it's only the 2nd hand of the tourney, so they have to. I don't care how many times someone says "Your pot committed, you HAVE to call"...if you know you're beat, you're beat - and pot odds don't apply.
Another note: I would have probably checked or gone all in on the turn, as a bet cripples me if I lose, and if my opponents are willing to call off 330, they're probably willing to call off the rest of their stacks as well (as they are also now rather shortstacked).

| | | | I was a little concerned about the possibility of a set or two pair, but I thought a rag king was more likely (and there were a lot of rag cards on the board, hence me being worried about two pairs). I didn't believe I was behind even as he pushed. I knew there was a chance he would be ahead, but I thought I was definitely ahead in that situation. Gives me something to think about though, maybe next time i'll successfully lay it down
Thx for your help bud | |

| | | | makes it easier to lay down since the guy with KQ called you both on flop and on turn. I'd say about 75% of the time someone has you beat in this spot. You have to realize that shoving into a bet and a call on turn shows extreme strength. It's not like he's shoving over a cbet heads up hoping you're bluffing.
I agree with 7letters, make your play on the turn. Either c/f, c/r all in, or lead out all in on turn. Doing otherwise puts you in tough spots on turn or river.
Wouldn't really say it's a maniac play. He's got the button and 2 callers in front of him. Really better to have 53 than a hand like 77 or AT, hands where you never know where you are on the flop. On flop, a bet and a call so he makes an easy call with the open ender. Pretty standard. Not saying it's optimal to play garbage like this, but if do it every once in a while it can be rewarding.
What site is this on where everyone starts with 1000 chips? Stars tournies start with 1500.

| | | | You are pretty much screwed after that flop, because the fish that called your 100 chip raise with 35 is a station, and then the openender hits the flop the mother of all fish hands. So I would easily say that you could have fired allin on the flop given your tournament and chipstacks, and you would have been called by both of your oppenents. Time to play dodgeball are you any good? | |

| | | | early in tournament i'm guessing it was probably a freeroll aka donkfest, 100 was not a healthy enough raise, you could have just pushed ur stack and the guy with kq probably would have called, but the 35 goes away. He flopped an openender so you weren't going to bet him off it when the flop hit and he turned the nuts so he definatlly isn't going to fold. I'm convinced that there are no good and bad players in poker, you can get your money in ahead 90 percent of the time and only win those hands 10 percent of the time, just how it is. it is 100% luck and timing. | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
