Unfortunately, Bugsy's doesn't show mucked cards. This was one of my first hands, so I couldn't really pin him on anything, but among the possibilities are AxQh, AxJh, perhaps even A7/K7 - low limits, people defend blinds with anything. When I made the raise I was just hoping for a flop that was ripe for stealing (i.e., J94 rainbow, etc), and then this happened .

Absolutely fine to make plays like that once in a while.

Nicely done.

THF Player of the Year
I think it's necessary to make plays like that sometimes, at cash games especially. Nice one

Mars is the senior donkey here, 8-6??? are you crazy?

but on a serious note, I love the raise, since a suited one gapper has alot of possibilities in addition to the ability to confuse and piss off your opponent and have him think you are a donk.

I have to admit, there is one downside to the entire thing.

Anyone who's been playing with me long enough knows I rely more on making plays off of reading other players (as is evidenced by my defense of calling a 4xbb raise with 35o in another thread). While it's great that I won an $18 pot here - $8.90 profit, 89 BIG BLINDS!! - it also ruined any chance of me setting up the correct table image to truly play my game. The only cards I like being shown by me are good ones. 2 of 5 pots I'll pick up in any given cash game may be bluffs, but I show the good hands every now and then, and no one suspects I'm occasionally raising with crap. Even if they do see some bad cards from me - missed bluff, whatever - it's generally been put into their minds by that point that I'm a solid player who doesn't bluff much, probably because I just failed at bluffing myself. However, since this happened early in the game, it's been burned into their minds that I'm going to raise with crap, and thus, future bluffs won't be respected, and half my pots are lost.

Now, this is different from the 35o in the other thread, in that with that thread, if the 35 gets shown, it's because I won the hand with a straight, trips, etc. I'm seen as loose, but not someone who will raise with crap (thus, future raises may still be respected).

THF Player of the Year
I get what you're saying Mars and at a cash game I too will usually only like to show the occasional good hand. However, even if they see a bluff or a play from me with small cards, I don't see it as such a bad thing. If you're taking down a lot of pots at a game, the players should know themselves that you can't possibly have a good hand all the time, they know sometimes that you are pushing your draws and making continuation bets and maybe sometimes outright bluffing them. OK, so they see one hand you played with 8-6 - so what? -

The most difficult player to play against is an aggressive player who obviously has a good hand sometimes, but is also aggressive when he's in a pot with inferior cards. The hard part is accessing if he' strong or not. I wouldnt be too concerned and start changing your plays just because you have shown one or two poor hands.

If you're up against an aggressive player, who's on a rushand he takes one particular hand down with an 8-high flush, does it make such a difference to how you play him? Surely you already know that he isnt always going to be in a pot with premiums.

I do get what you are saying though and I suppose a lot here depends on your opponents but I don't think you should necessarily adjust your style just because you've shown a small hand.

Infact, if I regarded a player as a fairly strong player, and I see him make a play with 8-6, then it would make me even more wary of him, because I now know that those plays are sometimes a part of his game.
