THF Player of the Year
As always on the forums, it would be an easier decision if we could label him as a tight or loose player and have some kind of read as to what type of hands he might be likely to raise with in that position.

Either way though- in my mind your fold is fine and I couldn't criticise your play throughout the hand either.

With the odds preflop, I think your call is fine and your standard bet with top pair and a decent kicker post-flop is fine too ( I wonder if a slightly bigger bet on the flop would be a choice - anyone?)

You call his raise on the flop - see the turn - and go from there. Seems fine to me also.

I really don't know what he's playing here. A over-pair like you said is possible, any pocket pair (5-5, 6-6, 7-7 possible) or just over cards, an AK maybe? Difficult.

Yeh, I think I'd fold.

I'm thinking he had a smaller pair like 44 and caught a trips. I guess we wont know for sure as he never showed. Either way I think you did the right thing by folding. How did you finish?

Finished 5th for $31.50, thanks for asking. These double stack tournies are pretty easy to run over. I was raising about 3 hands every orbit and winning the hands about 80-90% of the time. By the way he later said he had A5, which is dubious, but I still think I made a correct laydown.

i dont know man..his raise preflop screams...I WANT A CALL....44 55 77 does not suit his raise one would either call to see a cheap flop or bet big to get ppl out and take the pot....1010 is possible but a bigger raise suits this starting hand..i have to say AAs KKs...it makes sense..he wants a call to earn more then just blinds and antes...the flop came under and may have you on top pair he min raises again maybe with the intention to take the pot but a call wouldnt be to bad as long as the turn doesnt pair or give the chance of a straight then he would pounce...anyways AAs KKs seems about right..one

Yes, I think you have a point there canete. I missed that and I hadn't really noticed just how small his preflop raise was.

was just about to say that too canente, i think his raise says he has AA or KK, especially the way he played the flop, he had you beat bad.

hard to say without a detailed read - too many variables

His bet on the turn is something of an overbet. He could do this with something like KK worried he wasnt going to get action but this would be odd play (not uncommon though just hard to rationalise).

With your check he may well be sensing weakness and either thinks he is ahead (with a bust hand/ low pair he wants to protect) or that you will fold.

Hands like aj are immenently possible holdings. A10, jj etc are also very possible though. Without a sense that it might be a bluff (40% likely without more info) fold is correct but looking for when people may be bluffing is always worthwhile. Survival is key in tourneys and you can fold plenty of times when you are ahead but often only once when you are behind.
