Regardless or the buy-in amount, I don't think its wise to risk all your chips early in a tourney on a pair only. You got out with a small loss. Its good to gamble, but under the right circumstances. That wasn't one of them. Good fold.

OK first off you put him on trip threes.

Because of this your fold was 100% correct.

However I did read him as having a suited ax in spades there. Would I in a real game have made the call though? Its one of those situations where if my read was wrong I was out and if it was right he still had 11-12 outs (aces and spades) to win.

I will say why I put him on asxs and then just cover myself a little with the "loose" calls thing.

OK - Ignoring the posibility that he is playing tricks and slow playing what cards could he have for the bet on the turn? He could have pocket 5s and have trips. Failing that the only holding he could have to justify the bet is a straight draw or a flush draw.

Whilst I think 24 is a holding that he is highly unlikely to have as4s is quite possible. It would make his call on the flop a little loose but it was a biggish pot and not a huge bet. As10s would be the hand I would be most inclined to put him on.

However it is possible that he is playing tricksy with a monster hand to start with. To me this seems too big a bet for that and whilst this is quite possible the most likely holding would be something like as3s, as4s, as10s. However there would be other possible holdings including the likes of pocket 3s etc so it is not a certain read. The big bet with and over card ace and a straight draw is a common play, it is a play that in slightly different circumstances ( a little more in the pot or slightly fewer chips ) I would consider doing myself.

Given that whilst i think it highly likely that he has asxs there are enough other possible hand types (all beating me) I think it would have been a toss up between calling and folding. However this was based on my reads. They were formed before I saw the end of the HH but they were not what you seemed to be putting him on (by your 33? comment).

As such you were 100% correct in folding. Even on the reads I had it would have been a very borderline call. Asside from the possible hands I have mentioned there is a slim possibility he has ak and has recently lost a big hand to a draw and as such is tilting and overprotecting his hand - similarly asks is a hand that there is a tiny chance he could have. Still I think with a different read the call would have been a close run thing.

To me in my loose calls post I was trying to focus on betting zones and reads you could deduce from times when people bet amounts that they would not bet on any genine hand (i.e. would only do on bluffs). This is not quite that case (your hand is a semi bluff rather than an out and out bluff for one thing) but the analogy is true. This is another case where making an apparently crazy call would be justified because the most likely holding of your opponent is something that you beat.

If the cards were slightly different (more chance for a straight etc to have been caught on the turn) it would be a very easy fold. Watch out for the large overbet on a flush draw and an ace - this is a useful bet to add to your arsenal (i think he does it at a poor time here but there are other cases where it is goos) both for yourself and others. Do it when you will have ALMOST pot odds if they call and a decent chance of them folding and you winning a decent pot.
