I got ripped for this from jizustin. Deep in the tourny, maybe 2 to 300 from getting paid. What do you think?

THF Player of the Year
I'm sure you may get more indepth reads mine here...myself, I don't think you were terrible. Your opponent set the hand up for himself by his check on the flop and then his weak play that followed.
You're not getting good odds for your draw when you call the turn but you then raise the river. The raise means either a bluff or you have a hand, he reads it wrongly and calls. He can see what's on the board and throughout, he never really tries to get you off the hand. Bad play by your opponent I'd say.

You had decent implied odds, and if you miss you should still be able to make the money...I like the play here.

he should have raised at the flop, when he checked i think you should have raised. a bet here could have taken down the pot

i would have folded at the turn

you really have to fold this preflop

Its hard but in tourneys late on the gap concept applies. You can bet with less and claim blinds but unless you are up against someone playing LOADS of hands (in which case if he is risk adverse a reraise is worth a thought) its a clear fold.

I actually made the same mistake in a FT yesterday. The guy had been raising on quite a lot of flops sometimes with the likes of 77 in early to mid position, sometimes i suspect with less. flop is kxx he had ak we both slow play. Before the hand we were the table leaders. Anyway that was terrible play from me.

As for your call on the turn - depends what you put him on. In terms of what he actually has you have TERRIBLE pot odds to call - even with implied odds - its a 4 outer. Then you have to think what he actually has. Personally I think he must have at least a pair and it is far from certain if you get a pair on the river that it wont give him 2 pair (e.g. he has kj) so unless you have solid reads You have to fold if you are not willing to make an aggressive reraise on the turn. On the cards shown that would be suicidal but it depends on your reads of him whether it is a play worth considering.

As for the river you played that fine.

Some people will critisise this guy for checking the flop. This is the kind of play I do a lot. People all seem to know the dicta "there is always an ace" and betting on flops when an ace comes late in a tourney rarely gives you full value in my experience. Should he call your reraise on the river? Thats tough - there is so much in the pot by that point. Personally I think he needs to check the river. There are few hands that will lose to him that will call.

You might say its setting up a bluff - thats true but you are checking with the expectation of calling unless you really sense strength. Whats more if someone really has the nuts they would often not bet the full amount to try to get some value for their hand. When they do this they save themselves 3500 chips.

Ben, surely when deep in a tourney the Gap concept loses a little value as people will be raising with less than premium hands as the blinds start to represent larger proportions of stacks?

I do agree with a fold preflop regardless of the above statement. Getting less than 1.7/1 on the bet preflop would be enough to make me ditch this hand. As played though when he checks the flop I'd consider taking a shot at the pot, betting around half pot and see if he plays back at me. If he raises me here I'm folding all day and even if he calls I am check-folding the turn unless I hit the miracle Jack.

Not overly terrible but I can see why he was pissed, you never had the odd, implied or otherwise, to draw to 4 outs.
