I'm unemployed too, so I know exactly whatyou mean.
Your best bet of cashing in a freeroll is to find a site which is not really small, too much risk of closure, but none the less on the small side. You get much smaller fields and sometimes the level of play is better.
For example, Third Bullet have only one genuine freeroll per day, and it is a bit early for US players, 7 am EST, although quite a few turn up. The total entry is usually around the hundred mark and they pay down to the number of tables plus 2. So 13 or 14 places payed is the current norm. In just this last week I have hit the final table 3 times, including a win and a third, for a total of $44. So making money from Frs can be done, albeit less than our employed colleagues might pick up from pay tourneys.
