The thing is, just think of how activity on their site would skyrocket if anyone and everyone actually had a chance. The 1% of their player base who actually has a shot at winning are the people, from a financial standpoint, who the prizes mean the least to.

Look at it this way:

The weekly CG500 has a top prize of $500. It's being taken down every week by (of course) players playing what?

$25/$50 NL (minimum buyin for the table is $1000)
$10/$20 NL (minimum buyin for the table is $400)
$5/$10 NL (max buyin is double the CG100 top prize)
$30/$60 limit (top prize is just over 8 big bets)

and so on and so forth... what is $500 to people who play these limits regularly?

Now picture everyone having an equal shot in this thing. You take a site that has 3000-4000 people logged in and almost immediately you are now looking at well over 10,000 (I have no facts to back this up but it makes sense to me).

I understand catering to the high end player. But what you have to understand is that Gold Cards are your "thing"... Gold Cards are what makes you somewhat special. You don't take something that has so much potential and hand it over to the 1% of your player base who plays big stakes in Series 2 and you certainly don't give away 20x more cards starting Series 3 in hopes that your low limit players won't notice that the only thing that changed is that the cards you said would increase in value are now worthless (kinda like finding out a LeBron James autographed rookie card has taken on the value of a 07-08 series unsigned card).

Cake Poker is still in the early stages of becoming a successful poker site. But taking the one thing that makes you different (and much more fun) and making it worthless for 99% of your player base is going to end up killing you. At this stage of your business life your goal should be to boost numbers... pure and simple. Short term you like the $$$ that rolls in from the high limit games, I get it. All you have to do is try to look at the long term to see your shooting yourself in the foot.

Give your .05/.10 players as much chance as your $25/$50 have at winning your weekly race (which is chump change for those that do win it currently) and your numbers will soar through the roof.

The problem Fink is they don't care about the GC 500. They figure that they are giving the low level players plenty of opportunity to cash in on either the Daily Lottery or one of the GC FreeRolls.

My biggest problem with this is that in order to cash in for the GC Lottery or play in a GC FreeRoll, you have to actually turn your GC over to them. In the mean time, the high roller sits back and makes an easy $500 in the GC 500 AND they get to keep their GC's. Then they can trade their GC in for a nice payout on a hard to get hand in the Daily Lottery or just keep the GC's and hope that they win the $52,000 most unique collection. And since they are getting GC's in some cases every 3-5 hands, it won't take them long to get a complete set.

Wow, that's some sh*t right there. I've been playing a lot of rings games lately on Cake at the .10/.20 cent tables and have yet to see a damn gold card given out at the tables I've played at.

It's based on the rake on the specific table generates for a Gold Card to be dropped. The limits you're playing mean you'd need to be at the table for around 200-250 hands to see one come down. I see that you usually play for about 30-40 hands on a table and then move to another one.

Also important to note that you must be dealt at least 20 hands before you are eligable to earn a Gold Card. In the early days, we had players 'sniping' cards, waiting for X amount of hands to be dealt, then joining the table to hope to steal the card, then standing up and waiting again. The players at the table work hard to unlock/earn that card, so we put steps in to make sure that players who deserved the card earned it.
